Historic neighborhood with a strong sense of community
In 1936, when a deadly tornado destroyed swaths of Gainesville, the community of Newtown was built to house those displaced by the disaster. Residents came to live in modest homes along forested streets, all within a mile of Downtown Gainesville and major roadways. Now, members of the Newtown Florist Club work to improve conditions for vulnerable residents.

Important facts about Newtown
Newtown was originally built over a landfill and has a high rate of deaths from diseases such as lupus, respiratory illnesses and various cancers. The Newtown Florist Club was established to care for sick citizens and provide wreaths for funerals, but it has since shifted to advocating for civil rights and environmental justice. Georgia’s Environmental Protection Division has issued multiple enforcement orders related to air quality over the past 20 years. In the wake of these findings, the Newtown Florist Club has established a community land trust. Through the trust, the club purchases land and builds affordable housing in unpolluted environs to preserve the community.

Regarding home prices, Newtown’s average is lower than the Gainesville and national average home values. Home prices start at $100,000 and go up to $280,000 or more for renovated homes.
