A quiet city just outside Savannah

Grow with Garden City, a community just 5 miles northwest of Savannah. "It's close to industrial areas and the port," says David D'Arcy, a local Realtor with Seaport Real Estate. "There are some newer areas around there, but right now, it's mostly older housing — '50s and '60s." Convenient for folks working at the Port of Savannah, Garden City sits about 2 miles off the shores of the Savannah River, its borders flush against the port. Suburbs here are quiet, and many have a rustic feel thanks to midcentury homes and larger lots fringed by dense tree lines, buffering noise from the many railroads that zag across the city. This community offers a slower pace of life than Savannah, but that may change in the coming years. "There's talk of expanding Garden City," says D'Arcy. "It's got to go through the state first, but I would keep an eye on that. If it's expanded, it'll be huge."

List prices range from $113,000 to $577,000. The average home value, $248,589, is what one could expect to pay for a three-bedroom home with one to two bathrooms. Depending on the neighborhood, folks can find houses on less than a tenth of an acre as well as homes on 2 acres or more.

Easy access to Interstate 16 and more

A map of Garden City shows that the area is roughly sectioned into fourths by three main thoroughfares — Main Street, Augusta Road and Interstate 16. Main Street and Interstate 16 run east and west, while Augusta Road virtually runs parallel to the Savannah River, curving north due west. Garden City is fairly car-dependent, but public transit is available. Chatham Area Transit (CAT) bus stops can be found around the city along main roads.
