For many, Garden City Park is New Hyde Park by another name. The hamlets, which brush against each other, are both part of the Town of North Hempstead; they share a ZIP code and community celebrations, and their homes cost less than in the nearby Garden City community but still have access to the Long Island Rail Road. Aside from a difference in school districts, the biggest difference between the two is that Garden City Park has the closest access to groceries and a few essential shops. Its shopping centers bring the hum of traffic into parts of the community, but aside from this, Garden City Park’s residential streets are typically quiet in the evenings. Children may play outside together, but people usually greet their neighbors and spend evenings indoors. "Most people know their neighbors, there's just not a lot of intermingling," says Teresa Coleman, a licensed real estate salesperson at Posh Homes Realty. The result is a friendly but quiet atmosphere where residents have the space to keep to themselves if they want.

Cape Cods from $600,000
Sidewalks trace either side of residential streets here, providing ample space for runners and dog walkers no matter what direction they’re headed. Cape Cods are incredibly common here, interspersed with new traditional and split-level homes. Two bedrooms can price below $600,000, but most three- to four-bedroom homes in the community range from $650,000 and $850,000. A few larger homes climb above this, capping out at about $1.8 million. According to Barbara Baur, a licensed real estate salesperson at Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Laffey International Realty who has sold in the area for 12 years, homes sell quickly. “A lot of times, they’re purchased during the first open house or the first showing because it’s such a desirable [community],” she says. The CAP Index crime score is 1 out of 10, which is below the national average of 4.

A patchwork of highly-rated school districts
Garden City Park is divided among three school districts. New Hyde Park-Garden City Park Union Free School District, which Niche gives an A-minus, serves the biggest part of the hamlet — everything west of Marcus Avenue and County Court House Road. The district’s only school, Garden City Park School, also gets an A-minus and teaches pre-kindergarten through sixth grade, after which children move to the Herricks Union Free School District. With an A-plus, the district is a big reason many families move to Garden City Park. "They have great soccer teams,” Coleman says. "But people that move here for the schools don't do it for the sports. It's for the academics." Children who start out in this district begin their educations at Center Street School, which also has an A-plus. From there, they move on to Herricks Middle School and Herricks High School. Both schools earn an A-plus. The Mineola Union Free School District, which has an A, serves a small southeastern corner of the community.

LIRR for commutes to Manhattan
According to Baur, another major draw to Garden City Park is its proximity to public transportation. At its southern edge, Merillon Avenue Station’s trains bring commuters to Manhattan’s Penn Station in less than 40 minutes, making a daily commute for work doable. And it's no fuss to catch the train downtown to watch a show. State Routes 25 and 25B, also known as Jericho Turnpike and Hillside Avenue respectively, run through the community as well. The southern part of the hamlet experiences quite a bit of traffic noise from the highway and surrounding roads. John F. Kennedy International Airport is just over 11 miles away.
Playing outdoors at Herricks Ball Park
Herricks Ball Park offers a playground and baseball field, while the nearby Park Circle is a popular place for daily walks or runs, teaching kids to ride a bike or setting up a picnic or game of frisbee on the green. Just outside the hamlet, Michael J. Tully Park hosts local games and practices on its baseball fields, basketball courts, football field and track. Its dog park is also extremely popular for its turf surface and water fountain — though, locals recommend bringing water and bowls just in case it’s not working on a hot summer day, especially since the park doesn’t have any shade. For an indoor workout, LA Fitness, Orangetheory Fitness and F45 Training are located in the community. “You still have access to all the Town of North Hempstead amenities,” Baur says. “You can use Nickerson Beach, Tully Park and Clinton G. Martin Park.” Clinton G. Martin Park is just 2 miles away and offers a pool during the summer. Nickerson Beach is on the South Shore, about 18 miles from home, and North Hempstead Beach Park is on the North Shore, about 8 miles away.

A diverse array of dining along Jericho Turnpike
"The area's diverse," Coleman says. “People of different nationalities live here." The community's restaurants reflect this through an array of international cuisines like Greek, Japanese, Dominican and Portuguese. Uncle Bacala’s is a favorite family-style restaurant that offers complimentary cotton candy to guests on their way out the door, and AVO TACO has live music every Thursday evening. American comfort foods like burgers and lobster rolls can also be found in the hamlet at The Rex and at several popular chain restaurants. King Kullen and Lidl offer groceries, while Petco has essentials for the furry, feathery or scaley members of every family. Garden City’s downtown is just over 2 miles away. “Garden City reminds you of a town that you’d find upstate or something — a quaint New England town with all the shops and different restaurants,” Baur says.

Italian eats and carnival rides at the Cellini Lodge Festival
Michael J. Tully Park hosts concerts and festivals for Garden City Park and New Hyde Park, including the annual Cellini Lodge Festival — an Italian feast featuring a full four days of pasta and zeppole booths, carnival rides and live music. The last night of the festival always closes out with fireworks.
