Resort and port town neighboring Myrtle Beach
Located in the middle of the Waccamaw Neck’s former rice empire, Murrells Inlet has been a busy port and resort town for over 300 years. Legend has it that even the famous pirates Blackbeard and Stede Bonnet docked there to bury their treasure. The inlet no longer has swashbuckling visitors, but adventure and relaxation on the water remain a prime focus for residents of this small marshland community. “It’s not really big; it’s maybe 7 miles total, so it’s a smaller area that really is attractive because there's lots to do but it's not so overly populated and congested,” says Drew Dellinger, who has lived in the Grand Strand for over 20 years and is a Realtor with Garden City Realty. Top-rated seafood restaurants are easy to find in the “Seafood Capital of South Carolina,” including along the Marsh Walk – Murrells Inlet’s version of a traditional seaside boardwalk. There are also plenty of ways to enjoy the beauty of the Grand Strand, whether it is fishing on the pier at Garden City Beach or teeing off at Wachesaw Plantation’s golf courses.

There are plenty of ways to play in the water or on land in the Low Country marsh. On the north side of the inlet, the area’s former rice fields are now occupied by golf courses, including Wachesaw Plantation Club on Wachesaw Drive and Wachesaw East Golf Club on Riverwood Drive. On the south side of the inlet, Morse Park Landing on Swale Avenue has a boat launch and a crabbing dock on the marsh. A few miles away, Garden City Beach offers miles of oceanfront sand and a large fishing pier that's open 24/7. The south side of Murrells Inlet also has some of the most recognizable landmarks on the Grand Strand. Brookgreen Gardens is renowned for having the country’s largest collection of American sculptures and a 9,000-acre botanical garden dubbed “the floral jewel of the Hammock Coast.” Less than a mile from the garden, Huntington Beach State Park has a 3-mile stretch of undeveloped beachfront, beginner-friendly hiking trails, and the Atalaya Castle, a nearly century-old Moorish-style mansion.

Crab, fish and more in South Carolina’s Seafood Capital
Known as the Seafood Capital of South Carolina, Murrells Inlet has no shortage of places to find fresh fish and crab. Just off Outboard Lane, the Murrell Inlet Marsh Walk is one of the area’s biggest foodie destinations. “The Marsh Walk was an old fishing village until recently. It’s a place where you can spend time on the water and do a little bit of everything,” says Amy Moss, a Realtor with Keller Williams who has been selling on the Grand Strand for five years. The Walk has some of the area’s top restaurants, including Bovine’s, Dead Dog Saloon, and Drunken Jack’s, which are all known for their selections of lobster tails, crab legs and baked oysters. The inlet also has several independent seafood markets, including Harrelson’s Seafood Market and Seven Seas Seafood Market along Ocean Highway, which sell fresh local fish, shrimp and clams to cook at home. Two larger shopping options are Food Lion on Mink Avenue or Walmart Neighborhood Market at the Inlet Crossing Shopping Center on Ocean Highway.

Food samples and fireworks at the Marsh Walk
In addition to having some of the area’s best seafood, the Marsh Walk also hosts the inlet’s biggest events. During the signature Taste of the Marsh Walk in February, attendees can sample dishes from the boardwalk’s most popular restaurants and shop at a pop-up artists’ market. Decorated boats and one of the Grand Strand’s largest fireworks shows are the main attractions at the Murrells Inlet July 4th Boat Parade. In December, the Walk transforms into the Wonderland of Lights – a display with thousands of twinkling decorations that is free to tour.
