Dunbar offers quiet, rural Lowcountry living right on the Black River
The Lowcountry neighborhood of Dunbar in rural Georgetown County sits on a bend in the Black River, making it a good spot for outdoor recreation. A winding backroad is the only way in and out of the community, set against a backdrop of pine forests and rolling farmland. Dunbar only has three establishments – a park, a church and a fire station – so folks head about 10 miles south to Georgetown for shopping and dining. In the springtime, the smell of blooming magnolias hangs in the humid air as anglers cast lines from backyards. Boating is a big part of the lifestyle here, with many homes featuring private docks. Scenic hiking areas are around the community as well.
Two community parks and nearby hiking, boating and hunting hubs
Dunbar Community Park features paved walkways, sports facilities and a playground. Choppee Recreation Center at Northwest Regional Park, less than 5 miles away, is a bigger athletic and social hub, with programs ranging from birdwatching tours and senior lunch socials to indoor pickleball, camping trips and various youth sports. “That campus is kind of our crown jewel,” says Beth Goodale, director of Georgetown County’s Parks and Recreation Department. “It’s the center of our northwest – a very vibrant facility and a great community.”
The 650-acre Rocky Point Community Forest borders the park. The expanse of protected pines is home to a boat ramp, kayak launch and a series of old logging roads repurposed as hiking trails. “Gosh, those trails are busy seven days a week,” Goodale says. “They’re beautifully maintained, so you can walk or bike.” More challenging hikes are roughly 15 miles west in the blackwater swamps of Black River Cypress Preserve. The closest wildlife management area is about 15 miles southeast.
Classic houses on large lots and minimal turnover
This community is home to various single-family properties, many of them on spacious multi-acre lots. Various styles are available, including ranches and Cape Cods. Houses don’t come up for sale often, so pricing data is limited. Roughly, most fall between the high $100,000s and $500,000. Waterfront properties and options with larger floorplans have reached the low $700,000s. Flood insurance is recommended across Georgetown County, especially for waterfront properties. Hurricane season ranges from early June to late November.
Dunbar residents are near an elementary, middle and high school
The Georgetown County School District serves this community. Less than 5 miles south of the community, Brown’s Ferry Elementary School for the Creative and Performing Arts earns a C on Niche. Carvers Bay Middle STEAM Academy and Carvers Bay Early College and Career High School are graded C-plus. The high school offers several extracurricular clubs and activities, from the yearbook club to the U.S. Marine Corps R.O.T.C.
Shopping and dining in Georgetown, fresh produce from a family farm
Residents typically head about 15 miles south to Georgetown to run errands, shop and enjoy a night out. The small city is home to restaurants and various grocery stores, including Food Lion, Walmart and Piggly Wiggly. But locals don’t have to head into town for fresh produce, thanks to Black Mingo Produce at Baxley Family Farms, a fifth-generation operation is popular for a range of locally sourced goods, from honey and raw milk to zucchini and strawberries.
The closest hospital and a 50-mile drive to Myrtle Beach International Airport
Browns Ferry Road is Dunbar’s main road and a direct route into Georgetown. The closest hospital, Tidelands Georgetown Memorial Hospital, is in the city. Georgetown also has a local airport, but for commercial flights, Myrtle Beach International Airport is the nearest option, roughly 50 miles away.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
