Gilberts is a fast-growing village in Chicago's far western suburbs

The village of Gilberts merges rural tranquility and scenic suburban living about 45 miles outside downtown Chicago. “One thing I’ve heard is that Gilberts is the quiet side of Randall Road,” says Riley Lynch, Gilberts’ assistant village administrator. “There’s a lot of open space and a lot of development, so it’s growing tremendously.” Up until the 1980s, Gilberts’ population was around 400. By the early 2000s, more housing development arrived and the population spiked to 8,000. As the 5-square-mile village continues to grow, locals maintain a strong sense of community. “This is a very neighborly community. That’s what I love about it,” says Dorthy Pastorelli, a Realtor with Compass who has lived in Gilberts since 2012. “Everyone knows the local president and the police chief. You just get that small-town feel where everyone looks out for each other. We also do a lot of events that keep the community together.” Nearby business parks along Randall Road are full of manufacturing plants, and Pastorelli says many locals make the hourlong commute to downtown Chicago.

Other communities with newer builds, you’re looking at $450,000 and up.” The median home price is $361,000, slightly below the national median. The most expensive houses reach the mid $700,000s. Homes in Gilberts are in high demand, averaging 24 days on the market compared to the national average of 45 days. Crime statistics for the area are not readily available.

The village hosts smaller seasonal events throughout the year, including a bonfire in October and a visit from Santa during the holidays. “Santa will ride around on a firetruck and go through every subdivision,” says Pastorelli. “And at the same time, they’re collecting donations for a food pantry.”
