Gavilan Hills
Neighborhood in Gilroy, California
Santa Clara County 95020
New construction in large subdivisions
Gavilan Hills has two main subdivisions in the central and northern portions of the neighborhood, while the Gavilan College campus takes up a large chunk of the neighborhood’s southern end. In residential areas, broad roads and cul-de-sacs wind around single-family homes and are bordered by streetlights and narrow sidewalks. Many houses have compact yards that are just big enough to house a sprinkling of small bushes and the occasional decorative garden. Properties also tend to feature paved driveways and garages that lend a hand in minimizing the amount of street parking. Houses are typically two stories and display a mix of Mediterranean and Spanish-style architecture, including red tile roofs, earth tone stucco exteriors and front-facing gables. Homes also often have Craftsman-style front porches that jut out from the front of the house. A majority of these residential properties were built during the 21st century and offer homebuyers more modern, contemporary amenities. Pricing ranges from about $900,000 to approximately $1.6 million, although most homes sell between $1.2 million and $1.3 million.Neighborhood parks and nearby golfing
Most residents are within walking distance of small neighborhood parks that have been incorporated into subdivisions and typically feature open lawn space, playgrounds and walking paths. Spanning more than 50 acres of land, Christmas Hill Park is a multi-use green space that offers biking and hiking trails, a baseball field, a playground and horseshoe pit. Parkgoers can also reserve picnic areas, which are accompanied by grills and wooden picnic tables. Gilroy Sports Park offers multiple ball fields, a large playground complex and multi-purpose athletic fields. Golfers can head to the Gavilan College Golf Course and play a quick nine under oak trees and in the backdrop of the rolling Gabilan mountain range. The course also offers a full driving range and practice area in addition to its par 31 layout and sprawling green fairways. The Gilroy Museum is located just a mile east of the neighborhood; in this Federal Revival-style building, visitors can browse exhibits that house more than 25,000 artifacts and documents relating to the history of the city of greater southern Santa Clara County area. Gavilan Hills is approximately 30 miles away from the ocean and coastline: “If people want sunshine, they’re heading to the beaches around Santa Cruz,” says Zoe O’Connor Gordon, a Realtor with Choice Homes & Land who has extensive experience selling homes in Santa Clara County.Nationally ranked college prep program at Dr. TJ Owens Early College Academy
Students in kindergarten through fifth grade can attend Las Animas Elementary, a public magnet school that receives a B rating from Niche. Solorsano Middle is another B-rated institution that serves grades six through eight. Secondary students have two options for high school: Gilroy High, a B-minus-rated school, or Dr. TJ Owens Gilroy Early College Academy, also known as GECA, which receives an A-plus rating and is in the top 2% of public high schools across the nation, according to Niche’s 2025 rankings. At GECA, which was founded in 2007 by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, students can simultaneously receive college credits alongside their standard high school education. These college courses are offered through a partnership with the nearby Gavilan College and can even enable students to earn enough credits to graduate high school with an associate’s degree.Return of the Gilroy Garlic Festival
Following a 6-year hiatus, the organizers with the Gilroy Garlic Festival Association officially announced the return of the Gilroy Garlic Festival in 2025. The beloved three-day festival was hosted every summer from 1979 to 2019 and attracted close to 100,000 visitors every year. For its 2025 return, the festival will take place at Gilroy Gardens theme park in a smaller venue than years prior to help facilitate the a gradual return. With August comes The Gilroy Rodeo, bringing the spirit of the Old West with it. “The Gilroy rodeo is so much fun,” Esposito says. “It caters to people of all ages — there’s something for everyone.” This event features three days full of barrel racing, bull riding, saddle bronc riding, team roping and bareback racing, with different age group brackets for several events. The rodeo typically takes place out on the ranches and sprawling farmlands located northeast of the city.
Residents commute up to San Jose and Silicon Valley area for work
According to O’Connor Gordon, many people in this area are commuting up to San Jose and the Silicon Valley area for work. She also notes that, since most people choose to drive, traffic can often pile up on the main highway, Route 101, en route to the Bay Area. Though most residents commute by car, public transportation is also an option. The Valley Transportation Authority services several bus stops along Princevalle Street, Thomas Road and Santa Teresa Boulevard. Gilroy is also home to a Caltrain station, which people can take to travel directly up into the Bay Area; the train also stops in neighboring cities like Morgan Hill and San Martin, which sit in between Gilroy and San Jose. The San Jose Mineta International Airport is located approximately 35 miles north of Gilroy and offers dozens of direct flights to major cities across the United States. St. Louise Regional Hospital is just under 8 miles away from Gavilan Hills and has a 24-hour emergency services department.Shopping and dining along Monterey Road
Situated in a former municipal building, the Old City Hall Restaurant is a popular fine dining option that features classic surf ‘n’ turf dishes and old-world, turn-of-the-century charm. Tacos Ameca is another option and serves traditional Mexican food in a casual diner setting. For groceries, residents can stop by the Gilroy Valley Market on Monterey Road. Three miles east, Walmart sells home goods, clothing and electronics. Gavilan Hills is also home to Garlic World – as can be expected from the garlic capital of the world – a spice store that also serves as a fruit stand, gourmet food store and gift shop. Down the road is the Cherry Shack, another fresh produce stand that sells goods grown in the next door agricultural and farming fields.
