Centered in the Mahoning Valley, Girard is one of Youngstown's many suburbs. According to the mayor, the city makes a concerted effort to provide meaningful amenities to its nearly 9,500 residents. "We have about a zillion entertainment opportunities and a team of firefighters that are also certified paramedics," says Mark Zuppo, mayor of Girard since 2024. "And if you live in Girard, it's all free." In addition to these services, Girard has a commuter-friendly location, B-graded schools, and below-average house prices.

The Mount Carmel Festival celebrates the city's Italian heritage with a weekend of food, live music and the biggest fireworks display in the Mahoning Valley. Other regular city-sponsored events include a summer concert series and a variety of holiday celebrations, all aimed at creating a strong sense of community pride. "My goal as mayor is to give kids a reason to return to Girard after college," says Zuppo.
Opened in 2023, Past Times Arcade is one of the Midwest's most popular locations for retro gaming. Owned and operated by the founder of the world's first pinball convention, the former grocery store has over 600 gaming cabinets and pinball tables. "Everyone in the pinball world knows about Past Times," says Mayor Zuppo. "It's a cultural destination."
