Sitting a little over eight miles south of Downtown DC, Glassmanor provides a reliable collection of humble homes on the outskirts of town with a tight-knit community and convenient connections. “The people who do choose this area tend to stick around, so you meet a lot of like-minded folks who are mostly very nice and create a solid community you can get behind,” says local property manager Tameeka Jackson.

As the cityscape gives way to the woods, Glassmanor emerges with winding roads lined with Craftsman and colonial designs. Ranch-style builds are common, but many plots use the hills to their advantage with split-level builds adding sunken basements and garages for extra square footage. These single-family homes give more room to breathe than in the city, with plots large enough for roomy lawns and thick trees from the surrounding forests. Numerous properties offer town houses and apartment rentals within the area as well to meet a wide variety of needs. Town houses range from $200,000 to $400,000 depending on the property’s age and access to amenities. Single-family homes range from $300,000 for a ranch-style build with three bedrooms and one bath, while a fully renovated colonial estate runs $500,000.

When you live this close to the woods, you gain access to beautiful outdoor areas that couldn’t feel further from the city. Head towards the Potomac and visit Oxen Cove Park. This former plantation now preserves Maryland’s history and continues to operate as a working farm while providing stunning hiking areas and hands-on exhibits. The Birchwood City Recreation Area provides the neighborhood park experience with facilities for hosting community parties, open fields and a large playground. Come to the North Barnaby Swimming Pool during the summer months, the community swimming hole featuring slides, a climbing wall and a fully trained staff of lifeguards and instructors.

The city might be beyond the trees, but life in Glassmanor means you can avoid the traffic and shop close to home. Connect with Livingston Road and quickly reach the Rivertowne Commons Marketplace, where you can knock out errands at Safeway or Target, enjoy a tasty meal from national chains or take in a movie at the AMC Rivertowne 12. The Eastover Shopping Center and Sunrise Shopping Center provide smaller settings for quicker stops when you’re in a hurry. You can even find a few local favorite spots for a meal if you’d rather avoid the marketplace crowd. Today’s Crab House takes advantage of the waters nearby to offer fresh seafood to the area, and Henry’s Soul Café dishes out soul food standards from its counter-serve storefront.

The kids of Glassmanor have multiple potential paths through school as part of Prince George’s County Public Schools. Most students take their first steps at Valley View Elementary, which Niche gives a C+. Oxen Hill Middle School requires a slight commute for those crucial years of adolescence, and Niche gives it a C-. All of Glassmanor’s kids take their final steps at Potomac High School, a C- school according to Niche with a teaching approach of “smaller learning communities” embracing individual interests in arts, business management, engineering and much more.

Hide from the grind of the city in the thick trees and secluded streets in Glassmanor, where DC can stay in the distance, but you’re never far from your next stop.
