About 12 miles south of downtown Pittsburgh, Glassport is the remnant of a mill town settled between the Monongahela and Youghiogheny Rivers. “It’s a historical town,” says Realtor Janna Sandleitner with Realty Access, who grew up in Glassport. “There was a glass company built in 1894, and that’s where the name comes from. My relatives and my neighbors all worked there.” While the glass factory closed, the community remained, with many people staying there for generations and neighbors really knowing each other. “I lived next door to my grandma and my great-grandma,” Sandleitner says. “It’s a community where people would come together and get together in their front yards. Where people would watch each other’s kids.”
The Glassport neighborhood offers many different styles of homes with yards.

Affordable Four Square homes with front porches
Houses in Glassport are brick or siding Four Squares featuring front porches with steps leading to the sidewalks. Streets have a more urban feel with the close proximity and lack of trees, and homes might only have a small square of grass in the front yards, but residents still go all out with lawn décor and flora. For parking, there’s some space along the narrow streets where residents can park, but many homes have detached one- to two-car garages around the back of their homes along narrow side streets. Glassport homes often list between $80,000 and $100,000, and Sandleitner highlights that affordability is a major draw to this community for many homebuyers.

Glassport's bridges and buses
Residents can get around Glassport through the local bus system, with stops all along Ohio and Monongahela Avenues. Because Glassport is between two rivers, several bridges connect it to other communities, like the Clairton-Glassport Bridge over the Monongahela that links the two towns. On the other side of the Youghiogheny, UPMC McKeesport is the nearest hospital, about 3.5 miles away. The town is more isolated from major motorways, but commuters traveling into the city can take Boulevard of the Allies. Pittsburgh International Airport is the main airport serving the metropolitan area, about 33 miles from Glassport.

Over in Pleasant Hills, Pastries A-La-Carte sports all of the best baked goods, like donuts, danishes, turnovers and bear claws.
The Pleasant Hills area also boasts two major shopping centers—Southland Shopping Center and Century III Plaza. Here, visitors can find fast-food chains and grocery stores, like Giant Eagle, Aldi and a Walmart Supercenter, all just 6 miles from Glassport. Just 4 miles away in Elizabeth is another Giant Eagle.

In the summer, the Three Rivers Arts Festival is a 10-day celebration of art featuring over 400 artists. The Pittsburgh St. Patrick’s Day Parade is a tradition dating back 150 years, with Irish step dancing and marching bands. A lot of drugs and high crime rate in the area. Needs better community policing. This area could be a lot better if there were something for the younger kids to do instead of getting in trouble, although aside from the drugs it hasn't been that bad.
