East Glastonbury
Suburban Neighborhood in Glastonbury, Connecticut
Hartford County 06033
Some homes in subdivisions and others on acres of land
Houses in East Glastonbury tend to be larger and sit on more land than homes in Glastonbury Center or North Glastonbury. Some homes sit on about an acre of land in subdivisions, while other properties are more secluded. Clusters of single-family homes are interspersed with protected land, lending to a more rural feeling. Houses range greatly in price and size: ranches and cottages built in the mid-20th century cost around $300,000 to $400,000, while larger contemporary homes typically go for between $700,000 and $1.5 million.A-rated Glastonbury Public Schools
Students can attend Hebron Avenue School for kindergarten through fifth grade and Smith Middle School for sixth through eighth grade. Both schools earn an A grade from Niche. Older students continue to A-plus-rated Glastonbury High School. The high school has about 2,000 students and offers an Agricultural Science and Technology Education program, also known as AgSci. The AgSci program offers a curriculum in subjects like aquaculture, trades and food science to accepted students. LINKS Academy is a small school serving K-12 students with special social, behavioral or academic needs. It has a four-to-one student-teacher ratio and is not rated by Niche. Next door to LINKS is the East Glastonbury Library, housed in a small red schoolhouse building dating to the 1800s.Hiking at Blackledge Falls and J.B. Williams Park
Glastonbury and the state of Connecticut have made efforts to preserve the town’s natural landscape. “The Connecticut Farmland Trust will give you money to not develop your land,” Finer says. “That allows the farms to stay in business instead of selling to developers.” Blackledge Falls Trail is one of several hiking trails in the neighborhood. Visitors hike along bubbling creeks and through the forest to the waterfall. Blackledge Falls also abuts more state forestland between Glastonbury and the towns of Marlborough and Portland. “People go up there with their dirt bikes,” Finer says. J.B. Williams Park has over 160 acres of land for hiking and exploring, as well as a playground and picnic pavilion. Anglers and hunters can join the East Glastonbury Fish and Game Club off Route 2, and golfers have the option to tee off at Blackledge Country Club, Tallwood Country Club or Glastonbury Hills Country Club.Quick drives to dining and events in Glastonbury Center
For quick errands, Highland Park Market and Walgreens are close to East Glastonbury's residential areas, off Manchester Road. Locals are also a quick drive from shopping and dining in Glastonbury Center, about 5 miles west. The center has a Trader Joe’s, a Whole Foods and restaurants including Chick-fil-A and Five Guys. There are also local spots: Ken’s Corner Breakfast & Lunch is a down-to-earth restaurant with waffles and omelets, and Bricco Trattoria is one of several Italian places serving favorites like carbonara and tiramisu.Glastonbury Center also hosts town events, such as the weekly Glastonbury Farmers Market during the summer and the annual Apple Harvest and Music Festival, which has carnival rides, live entertainment, vendors and more. “It’s huge. It’s been moved three times since I moved here in ‘78 because it keeps growing,” Finer says.
Commuting to downtown Hartford by car
East Glastonbury is car-dependent. Commuters can take Route 2 into downtown Hartford, which is about 10 miles northwest. Route 2 also connects with major Interstates 84 and 91 across the state. “All those highways make it convenient for people to commute anywhere they want, or go shopping in places like South Windsor,” Finer says. Manchester Memorial Hospital is about 7 miles north, and Bradley International Airport is 25 miles northwest. East Glastonbury has a CAP Index crime score of 1, lower than the national average of 4.
