Glen Rock gives residents a piece of rustic seclusion
Once a rumbling railroad town, Glen Rock now offers tranquil living in the rolling hills of York County. This south-central community of about 2,100 residents is filled with classic homes on quiet streets. “A lot of history, a lot of really cool buildings and architecture,” says Gina Baum, a local Realtor with Howard Hanna Real Estate Services who has almost 20 years of industry experience. All are within a mile of eateries and other businesses at the center of the borough, and within 15 miles of other communities in the county.
The town blends historic architecture with newer subdivisions
Incorporated in 1859, Glen Rock still has quite a few homes that date to the 19th century. The area has an assortment of classic colonials, American Foursquare styles and farmhouses. However, Glen Rock also offers modern, New Traditional houses in spots, including the Colonial Meadows and Fields of Broad Springs subdivisions. “It’s a little bit of everything out there,” Baum says. The median lot size here is nearly half an acre — buyers can find properties on less than a tenth of an acre and others on multiple acres. Homes needing work can go for less than $100,000, but most properties sell for $160,000 to $570,000.
Glen Rock’s history inspires area businesses
The Glen Rock Mill Inn is one of the community’s landmarks, a preserved former grist, saw and wool mill built in 1837. The mill now houses an Inn, with bookable rooms through Airbnb, and the Table 1837 restaurant. “It’s fine dining,” Baum says. “A historic part of Glen Rock.” The brunch at Table 1837 is popular, as is the five-course tasting menu, available during dinnertime. Simple Local, connected to the inn, is a boutique that carries wine, ice cream, jewelry and more. Rail Trail Tavern, situated by a piece of Glen Rock’s railroad, is adorned with a locomotive mural and is a place to grab a drink. The tavern’s food menu includes items like brisket sandwiches and wings. Main St. Market sells fresh produce and meats from area farmers. Baum says residents head 4 miles southeast to Shrewsbury for more amenities — that borough of nearly 4,000 has a Walmart Supercenter and a Giant supermarket.
Carolers ring in Christmas with a long-running tradition
The Glen Rock Carolers buoy what’s perhaps the area’s most deeply rooted annual tradition, dating to 1848. The group of 50, clad in top hats, rings in Christmas morning at midnight and continues until 7 a.m., singing through town while hundreds follow along and enjoy the music. Other area events include the Glen Rock Arts & Brew in June, featuring a beer garden, food, and arts and crafts vendors.

Rail history lives on through Glen Rock’s trail and parks
Glen Rock Park offers space for multiple activities on the community's southwest end, such as a playground, baseball and softball fields, basketball and tennis courts and a pavilion. Residents also have access to Heritage Rail Trail County Park, a crushed-stone path that traces 27 miles along the area’s rail lines, from the Maryland border to the city of York . The railroad was an important part of life here until the mid-20th century.
