Good Hope is a growing suburban neighborhood north of Milwaukee

Good Hope is where Milwaukee’s urban area begins opening up to the more spacious suburbs of Ozaukee County. Taking its name from a local tavern, this section of northern Glendale was once a separate community in the mid-1800s. Today, Good Hope is seeing new energy thanks to its location near the northern edge of Milwaukee. “It’s a mix of first-time homebuyers and longtime residents, and it’s seen some turnover as new families move in,” says Brian Paul, a real estate agent with Re/Max Lakeside. Surrounded by outdoor recreation, major roads, employers and retail, Good Hope is also home to several highly rated schools.

Ranch-style homes are common along Good Hope's grid-patterned streets

Homes in Good Hope tend to sit on narrow, grid-patterned streets, without sidewalks but with large lawns and trees. “The pride of ownership is quite evident here,” Paul says. Most properties were built in the 1950s to the 1970s. Ranch-style homes go for $250,000 to $560,000, while condo units in the northeast sell for $130,000 to $170,000. “There aren’t many HOAs in the area, so people who are trying to stay away from HOAs might find Good Hope to be a good choice,” Paul says.

Brown Deer Park is a major hub of outdoor recreation

Brown Deer Park forms part of Good Hope’s northern border. In addition to a fishing pond, the massive park includes baseball diamonds, soccer fields, the pitch for the Milwaukee Hurling Club, plus a playground, a disc golf course and a public golf course. Established in 1929, the 18-hole course is locally famous for its connection to Tiger Woods’ pro debut back in 1996. “The local rumor is that ‘everyone was there’ and that they saw Tiger win that day. But he didn’t win — he just went pro that day,” Paul says. “For years, it was rated one of the best golf courses in the area.” Within Good Hope, the Paley Tennis Center offers an indoor venue for friendly competition. At nearby Kletzsch Park, visitors can walk the bog loop trail, play baseball or test their draw at the archery range.
