Green Tree offers suburban quiet close to Lake Michigan and Milwaukee

Green Tree packs shopping, health care and good schools into a quiet community not far from Lake Michigan. The compact neighborhood is only slightly inland from the waterfront communities of Fox Point and Whitefish Bay and their lakeshore beaches. On the other side of the neighborhood, the interstate separates Green Tree from the rest of Glendale. “It’s the best of suburban living yet close enough to the city to feel connected to all that Milwaukee has to offer,” says Julie Olson, a real estate agent with Shorewest Realors.

Port Washington Road offers diverse retail and dining

Port Washington Road is lined with major conveniences, including the local Aldi and Metro Market supermarkets, medical practices and a handful of cafes and restaurants. Just beyond Green Tree’s northern edge, the Calderone Club serves Italian food in a dining area surrounded by colorful murals. The Glendale Market shopping center includes both chain and local eateries, including Samurai, which offers the traditional hibachi experience. “Glendale Market has all sorts of things, from terrific restaurants to a new veterinarian, grocery options and hair and nail salons,” Olson says. “Green Tree has another shopping center on Green Tree and Santa Monica that has Wheel & Sprocket, Milwaukee’s best bicycling supplier. There’s also a great bakery in there called Matilda as well as other restaurants.” Every Saturday from June to October, the nearby Fox Point Farmers Market sells baked goods, handmade soaps, pastries and more while also featuring live music.

Nearby parks sit along Lake Michigan and the Milwaukee River

Though Green Tree may not have any parks of its own, it borders several small green spaces. Longacre Park includes four tennis courts, a soccer field and a playground. The Lake Michigan waterfront is also accessible within a few miles, and with it the beachfront playgrounds at Doctor’s Park and Klode Park in Fox Point and Whitefish Bay. “Doctor’s Park features tons of great hiking, a really terrific playground, a traveling summer biergarten and, of course, access to the lake,” Olson says. North of Green Tree, Indian Creek Park includes its own tennis courts, playground and baseball diamond. Less than three miles west of Green Tree, the expansive Brown Deer Park is best known for its 18-hole golf course, where Tiger Woods went pro in 1996, and which is open to the public. Kletzsch Park, with its waterfall and walking paths, is also located across the Milwaukee River.

Interstate 43 links Green Tree to health care and the big city

Green Tree’s location along Interstate 43 puts it within a 10-mile drive of downtown Milwaukee. Ascension Columbia St. Mary’s serves as the local general practitioner, while the main Ascension Columbia St. Mary’s hospital is a 4-mile drive down the highway. Though the highway plays a prominent role in Green Tree’s day-to-day life, it has little effect on residents’ sleep cycles. “With all of the construction that has been done on I-43, they’ve done a fantastic job with the sound walls,” Olson says. “The sound of the interstate is a low hum that’s almost unnoticeable.”
