A small community near Easton
Bordered by the Lehigh Canal and its sprawling greenways and only 3 miles from downtown Easton, the borough of Glendon, Pennsylvania, is best described as a super small town. “If you drove through and blinked, you’d miss it,” says Jonathan Miller, a local Realtor with RE/MAX Real Estate. Glendon has more industrial facilities than houses and few established retail businesses, but growth is anticipated. “A lot of people from New York and New Jersey are heading into the Lehigh Valley because prices are lower,” says Patricia Hansell, Realtor with Real Estate of America. Established in the 1800s, even at its height, Glendon never had a population that topped 1,000. Now, it has less than 400 residents in a town that offers rural country living just minutes from upscale shopping and dining.
Most shopping and dining in nearby Easton
Glendon is home to one bakery and two small family-run markets operating from the owners' homes. Along Berger Road, Crivellaro Family Market and My Little Farm Stand sell a mix of local honey, handmade soap and fresh seasonal produce from small stands outside their homes. Tomblers Bakery is known for its beef pasties, perogies and cookies. Larger grocery stores like Giant and Aldi are less than a mile away in Palmer Town Center. Major retailers like Dick’s Sporting Goods, Marshalls and The Home Depot are also found here. Weyerbacher Brewing Co. is the closest spot for a drink after work. Weyerbacher is packed to the brim on Trivia Thursdays and throughout the weekend with live musical performances. Regarding date nights, Hansell says, “Everybody goes to Easton for its fancy New York-class restaurants, bars, cultural events, colleges and theaters." One of those upscale eateries, River Grille, is known for American classics and its grand stone fireplace, perfect for cold Pennsylvanian nights.
Homes along rural roads
This small borough is part rural residential and industrial. Sites range from distribution and trucking companies to the local landfill, where groundwater contamination from prior industrial usage has been documented since 1980. However, residents whose wells were impacted in the past now utilize the public water system. Properties along Main Street sit snugly next to one another and overlook the trees that offer a buffer from the railroad tracks below. Housing styles range from vinyl-sided colonials to bungalows and townhouses, and some are better maintained than others. Sitting close to the street, many of these homes forego front yards and offer alleyway parking. To the east, Berger Road gives way to a range of houses that include classic colonials, split- and bi-levels, and traditional ranch-style homes. They sit back farther from the road and boast larger lots that provide enough room for a backyard pool. Sales prices in Glendon typically range from the low to upper $200,000s, while a few larger colonials can sell into the mid $400,000s.
Walking trails along the Lehigh River
Several parks along the Lehigh River offer a breath of fresh air. At Hugh Moore Park, miles of meandering trails deliver scenic waterside views. It’s common to see kayakers and canoeists floating down the river on a sunny day. However, swimming is not recommended since the Lehigh River is ranked as one of the most polluted watersheds in the nation. Other amenities include a bike skills course and multiple playgrounds where kids can run around. Locals and visitors alike can enjoy historic boat tours or dive into the history of the surrounding towpath canals at the National Canal Museum. Although this park is next-door to the borough, due to the bordering railroad tracks, locals must loop around and cut through West Easton to reach it. In neighboring Williams Township, Chrinergy Recreational Field is known for its public softball and soccer fields.
Small class sizes at Wilson Area High School
Glendon used to have three schools, but the last one closed its doors in the ’50s, and the neighborhood was incorporated into the Wilson Area School District. Kindergarten through fourth-grade students may attend Wilson Borough Elementary School, which scores a B rating on Niche. Children in fifth through eighth grade may attend Wilson Area Intermediate School, which also earns a B. The A-minus-rated Wilson Area High School offers extracurricular activities that range from athletics to the arts but also provides a small student-to-faculty ratio of 15-to-1.
Nights at the State Theatre
With its proximity to all Easton offers, Glendon residents often flock downtown for various events and attractions. The State Theatre is a popular destination. “Easton’s made a great comeback in the past five to 10 years," says Christopher Butler, a broker with REMAX Supreme who has more than 35 years of experience in the area. “The State Theatre brings in first-class performers and puts on many great shows. So even though you’re in a rural area, you still have access to cultural events.” The Easton Farmers' Market is one of the oldest in the nation, established in 1752. Other events in the city include Heritage Day, which features live performances and historical reenactments. During Easton’s Winter Village, ice skating is available throughout the evening under sparkling lights, carriage rides are offered or shoppers can stroll the holiday market looking for the perfect gift.
Houses of worship around Glendon
Glendon is so small that the borough has no houses of worship. However, Easton has many, which range from churches to synagogues and Islamic centers. Those looking for a small-town congregation can head to Blue Church in neighboring Williams Township.
Commutes to Allentown on Interstate 78
Glendon residents are only 3 miles from downtown Easton. This neighborhood is highly car-dependent, as the nearest bus stops are found throughout the southside of Easton. Interstate 78 runs right through the middle of the community, connecting commuters to Allentown, which is about 20 miles to the west. Lehigh Valley International Airport is also about 13 miles west along U.S. Route 22. Larger cities like New York are about 75 miles away. In case of emergencies, St. Luke’s Hospital Easton Campus is only a 2-mile drive.
