Postcard of suburbia

Glenmont is the epitome of suburbia. Kids ride their bikes down the streets, playgrounds cater to small children and neighbors get together for events ranging from yard sales to seasonal festivals. Development in the community ramped up in the mid-20th century, turning the rolling green hills with farms and family homesteads into baby-boomer subdivisions. Communities like Greenwood Knolls feature $500,000 midcentury split-level homes, whereas Georgian Forest is home to ramblers from the 1950s and 1960s for around $600,000. Townhouses from the 1980s sit within the Tivoli Community, and Wheaton Out features brand-new homes, like contemporary builds with a barn texture for $1.5 million. Multifamily apartment buildings and condos, designed in the midcentury modern style, can still be found in Glenmont. A 1970s condo with three bedrooms costs between $250,000 and $300,000. Older cottages, bungalows and ranch-style houses are ripe for renovations and additions. Sidewalks separate front yards from the street, with shady trees lining the roadway. Short driveways lead right to houses, sometimes with parking spaces in front. Demand is high, especially for custom-built homes. Each community has its own perks and drawbacks. Tivoli, for example, has a community center, a fitness center and a playground for children. The Strathmore at Bel Pre community has a pool, an annual yard sale and an active civic association with a newsletter.
