Quiet North Shore community on the historic Gold Coast
Living on the North Shore on Long Island’s historic Gold Coast has always drawn people seeking to escape the noise of New York City. Glenwood Landing takes that lifestyle to the extreme, home to scant few local businesses and centered around a post office that does not offer delivery service. If residents want their mail, they head down to Glenwood Road for pick-up. “It’s a smaller enclave of homes in Glenwood Landing, but it’s still driven by the same North Shore School District,” says Michael Stanco, founder of the Stanco-Misiti Team at Compass Greater New York who lives in neighboring Glen Head. “If people leave for the city, they come back here to raise their families.” Quaint details like Glenwood Landing’s post office and school district pride blend with luxury condo development and century-old country clubs on grassy hills and along Hempstead Harbor, settled between more commercialized communities in this comparatively quiet slice of the Town of Oyster Bay.

Glenwood Landing single-family homes and The Residences
Quiet residential streets wind up and down hills throughout the hamlet, lined by 20th-century single-family homes ranging from prewar bungalows to midcentury ranch-style homes to colonials and the occasional recently built new traditional. It’s hard to buy into Glenwood Landing for under $700,000, but a small number of older fixer-uppers can sell in the $600,000s. Single-family homes usually sell for $700,000 to $1.7 million. Mature trees shade homes throughout the hamlet, but narrow sidewalks are found only along a few main roads. Away from the landscaped, hilly suburbia that covers most of Glenwood Landing, a sleek, new midrise building hugs the shore of Hempstead Harbor. Prices for luxury units at The Residences at Glen Harbor range from $1.4 million to $3.4 million. “We helped put Glenwood Landing on the map; 11547 became one of the highest priced ZIP codes in the country because of The Residences at Glen Harbor,” Stanco says. Beyond the perk of waterfront views, monthly HOA fees cover amenities like an outdoor pool, two fitness centers and 24-hour doorman service.

Shopping and dining in Glen Head
For shopping or dining beyond what’s available at Duffy’s Bait & Tackle, it’s necessary to travel a mile or two outside of Glenwood Landing. Glen Head’s commercial strip is just down Glenwood Road, positioning a bank, gas station, nail salon and bubble tea shop on the barely-there dividing line between the two communities. Gemelli Gourmet Market is nearby for groceries, and Holiday Farms Supermarket is a little further into Glen Head. Our Savior’s Lutheran Church holds services near the border of the two hamlets. Other North Shore communities like Roslyn and Glen Cove provide diverse restaurants just a few minutes further from home, including Kyma, a favorite for Greek cuisine and airy ambiance and Sid’s All American, a retro roadside burger joint.

Parade kicks off junior baseball league's season
While the junior baseball league is shared with Glen Head, the traditional start to the season falls squarely within Glenwood Landing. Teams don their uniforms and gather at Glenwood Landing Elementary School, proceeding to the home fields at Glen Head’s Francis M. Gaynor Park for an opening day celebration and barbecue. The Glenwood Life Center holds more frequent events and classes inside the white-steepled former Glenwood Presbyterian Church. Children’s martial arts classes are scheduled for some nights, and adults attend Tai Chi or yoga classes on others. Larger-scale events like church festivals and summer carnivals take over main streets and town parks in the Oyster Bay hamlets surrounding Glenwood Landing.
Proposed industrial turnover on Shore Road
Between North Shore’s school bus yard and The Residences at Glen Harbor, a long stretch of Shore Road is strictly industrial. The Global Glenwood Landing Terminal has long been a stop for barges and tanker trucks transporting gasoline, but there's a recent proposal to develop a battery energy storage facility on the property. Local leaders have discussed concerns about potential environmental impact alongside the existing facility’s potential for oil contamination, as well as benefits like an improved power grid and increased union jobs. As of 2024, the Town of Oyster Bay is still considering Jupiter Power’s proposal.
