Globe melds history with modern conveniences
The discovery of silver here spurred Globe’s founding in the late 19th century, and for many, the area still gleams with present-day appeal. An Arizona community just east of the Phoenix metro, Globe features a historic downtown with a robust restaurant scene, is within arm’s reach of hiking trails and is still a nerve center for mining. Its hilly terrain includes an assortment of classic homes, many offering views of the Pinal Mountains. “It has that historic charm. And I think that’s what people are drawn to,” says Jessy Perkins, a local Realtor at Stallings & Long Realty Services with 10 years of experience.
The downtown area of Globe showcases a compact grid of historic buildings surrounded by sloping streets and distant mountains.
The surrounding hillsides frame Globe’s small-town setting, highlighting its roots as a mountain mining community.

Established houses find new life in Globe
Many of the homes date to the early to mid-20th century, and a lot of them are Craftsman-style bungalows. Floor plans average about 1,700 square feet. Renovations and updates are common. “We get investors that come in and pick them up from an estate or something — they’ll buy them for cheap or remodel them and then resell them,” Perkins says. Lots, plotted around Globe’s winding streets, are often between a quarter and a half-acre. Homes that still need work sell for $40,000 to $80,000, while most of those with updates go for $100,000 to $390,000.
Globe’s historic neighborhoods feature compact miner’s cottages with wood siding and modest porches, reflecting the city’s early 20th-century roots.
Some homes in Globe blend Victorian-inspired gables with more modern renovations, highlighting the area’s architectural variety and layered history.

Rugged landscape is a playground for hiking, camping and fishing
Globe’s history and recreational allure blend in places like Old Dominion Historic Mine Park, a 195-acre space once the site of a copper mine from 1880 to 1931. Today, the area offers a playground, trails and a disc golf course. There are 7 more miles of trails at the 386-acre Round Mountain Park. Adventurers can travel farther outside the community to access the trails and campsites within the 450,000-acre Globe Ranger District of the nearly 3-million-acre Tonto National Forest. The paths, including the 10-mile Campaign Trail, are open for hiking, horseback riding and cycling. The Jones Water Primitive Campground is popular among bird-watchers. Anglers in Globe are just about 30 miles from the nearly 21,500-acre Roosevelt Lake, where they can catch bass, catfish and more.

The heart of Globe is ripe with restaurants
Lined with multiple buildings that date to around the turn of the 20th century, Globe’s downtown is known in part for its restaurants. “We probably have some of the best food,” Perkins says. “Mexican food is probably the predominant food.” La Luz Del Dia, for example, is a draw for its breakfast burritos, and El Ranchito’s salsa is locally renowned. Perkins says Globe also has some good barbecue restaurants, including Gila Hogs BBQ and Salinas's Smoke Street. Downtown Globe also has an eclectic mix of retail shops. “There’s a lot of antique stores, a lot of little boutiques, that bring people from all over,” Perkins says. Topo Jones is one of the stores, a bike shop that offers rentals. United Jewelry Company has everything from rings to musical instruments. There’s a Safeway downtown for groceries and other essentials. Besides shopping and dining, people can peruse some of the historic downtown buildings of significance, including the Cobre Valley Center for the Arts. The center is housed in what was the Gila County Courthouse, built in 1906. The 1910 Gila County Sheriff’s Office and Jail is now a visitor center, while Globe’s 1916 train depot is used by the Globe Downtown Association and is adjacent to the Railroad History Hall Museum.

Locals come together for multiple events downtown
There’s a weekly farmers market at the heart of Globe’s downtown every Saturday from June to September, off Pine Street. Holiday events in the area include a Halloween block party, with trick-or-treating, and a visit from Santa on the Saturday following Thanksgiving at the historic train depot. “Pretty much the entire town turns out for Halloween downtown and Santa,” Perkins says.
Globe schools offer STEM opportunities early
The Globe Unified School District carries a C grade on Niche. The C-plus-rated Copper Rim Elementary includes dedicated STEM classrooms. High Desert Middle has a C grade and multiple successful sports teams, including a girls basketball squad that won a recent Central Junior High League championship. The B-minus-rated Globe High has a robotics program.
The school grounds at Globe High School offer an expansive setting for events and activities, easily visible from across the city.
High Desert Middle School is surrounded by open desert terrain and mountain views, offering students a serene and spacious setting for learning.

Drivers have quick access to Highway 60
Part of U.S. Highway 60 runs by Globe’s downtown. Commuters in the area can hop on that thoroughfare to travel west to Miami, Globe’s sister city, around 6 miles away. The Cobre Valley Regional Medical Center is about a 5-mile trip on Highway 60, Russell Road and Hospital Drive. Mesa Gateway Airport is roughly 70 miles away and travelers can catch flights on Allegiant Air to over 40 destinations.
