A community across the river from downtown Gloucester

Less than a mile from downtown lies West Gloucester, a sprawling neighborhood filled with homes and protected parks. Here, outdoor recreation is the most popular pastime, including activities like hiking, mountain biking and spending time at the beach. When residents are not outside, they can take advantage of the shopping and dining options on the western end of the Annisquam River. There is fresh lobster at nearby restaurants and local produce and flowers at a farm stand that has been a part of the community for over 60 years. The neighborhood is also well connected to highways and has its own commuter rail station.

Modest Cape Cods and waterfront Colonial Revivals

West Gloucester offers housing variety, including smaller ranch-style and Cape Cod homes and larger New Englander and Colonial Revival styles. No matter the size or style, homes are situated on spacious, green lots. “You get a little more space out here as compared to the downtown area in terms of yard size and acreage,” says Rick Marshall, a vice president at J Barret Realty and lifetime resident of the Gloucester area. While there are a few condos and single-family homes that price between $300,000 and $700,000, most homes in the area fall within the $1 million and $2 million range. Within this range, buyers may find houses on expansive lots with an in-ground pool or access to the water or a local park.

Hiking and beachfront recreation along Cape Ann

Tompson Street Reservation and Red Rocks Conservation Area are the main picks for hikers and mountain bikers, two of the more popular hobbies in the community. “People all year round come from all over to the parks here, especially for the biking,” Marshall says. Residents can also access nearby public beaches, including Wingaersheek Beach, which is staffed with lifeguards during summer months and sells food and drinks at its concession stand.

Gloucester fiestas and blues festivals

The city of Gloucester hosts more than 15 major events throughout the year, many of which are in the Central Gloucester area or along the water. St. Peters Fiesta, held each June, was started by an Italian fisherman who called Gloucester home. The event includes carnival food, rides, ceremonial parades and a boat horn blow that can be heard all around the Cape. The community comes together again in August to celebrate the Gloucester Blues Festival at Stage Fort Park each year. Here, nationally recognized blues performers line the beach alongside beer vendors and food trucks.

Highway access and the West Gloucester commuter rail station

West Gloucester is a predominantly car friendly area. “People tend to drive and bike to get around, there’s not as much walking anymore,” Marshall says. Western Ave and the Yankee Division Highway are the main thoroughfares for residents, connecting to other major roads like U.S. Route 1 and Interstate 93 for routes to Boston and the rest of Massachusetts. Residents can also access the West Gloucester commuter rail in the center of the neighborhood. Addison Gilbert Hospital is 3 miles from the community, and Boston Logan International Airport is 30 miles away.

Seasonal shops and restaurants

Although it is only open from mid-April to December, Marshall says that Lobsta Land, with its fresh seafood and custom cocktails, is probably one of the most popular restaurants in Gloucester. Residents can also dine at The Causeway Restaurant, which has a number of classic Italian and seafood options, from fish and clam chowder to seafood marinara. They also offer custom fried platters, so diners can mix and match their favorite dishes. There is a Shaw's in downtown Gloucester, and from April through October, residents can find farm-fresh goods at Marshall’s Farm Stand and Greenhouses. “It’s a lovely local spot that has been around for more than 60 years; people come from all over to visit,” Marshall says.
