Neighborhood big on golf and hiking

In the shadows of the Superstition Mountains, Gold Canyon is an active community 35 miles east of Phoenix. “People come out this way for the clean, open air and the golfing and hiking,” says Robert Nye of Just Selling AZ, who has sold over 25 homes in the neighborhood. “A lot of people in the area also ride motorcycles and the roads out east have way less traffic than in towards the city.” The neighborhood is made up of a mix of large homes in gated communities and ranch-style builds on quiet streets. Peralta Regional Park has plenty of hiking, and there are half a dozen golf courses within a few miles. The majority of the commercial and residential real estate is on the western side of the neighborhood, as much of the western side is dominated by the Superstition Mountains. It’s the type of neighborhood where locals appreciate their space.

Variety of homes

The median price for a single-family home in Gold Canyon is $500,000, but large estates on the golf course go for well over $1 million. “The prices may seem high, but they are lower than closer to the city, and the homes keep appreciating,” says Nye. The prevailing home style is adobe ranch-style builds, but more expensive properties have a grander Craftsman-style feel. Properties on the golf courses have more space, but the majority of houses in Gold Canyon are clustered on smaller lots. The homes are situated on quiet streets and feature private driveways and garages for parking. Most homes favor rock landscaping over natural lawns, but some have turf putting greens in the backyard. Wide sidewalks make it easy to dog walk.

Peralta hiking and Gold Canyon Golf

With its proximity to the Superstition Mountains, it’s no surprise that much of the recreation in the area involves hiking. Locals visit Peralta Regional Park, located in the mountain range, where there are over nine miles of multi-use trails. Hikers, bikers and horse riders take to the different trails with varying difficulty. The park also offers climbing walls and campsites. The Carney Springs Trailhead is an easy 1.6-mile loop for hiking and walking. Children can play at Dinosaur Park, which was built in 2021 and has playground equipment and swings. Golfers can hit the links at one of two 18-hole championship courses at Gold Canyon Golf Resort & Spa. The resort also has a full restaurant and bar on site.

Wahoo's and more

Locals can start the day with a full breakfast from Gold Canyon Café, which is a casual spot known for breakfast burritos and eggs benedict. Wahoo’s Restaurant & Bar has a saloon feel inside and an expansive patio area. The laidback spot serves up traditional bar food and has live music on the weekends. De La Cruz Mexican Grille is a local favorite for margaritas, and the patio seating provides scenic views of the Superstition Mountains. Gold Stallion is a great place to watch the big game, with plenty of televisions lining the walls. Grocery shopping is convenient as the local Bashas’ is located just off Route 60. There are not a ton of retail options in Gold Canyon, but just to the west in Gilbert and Scottsdale are plenty of shopping opportunities.
