Welchs borders the Colorado School of Mines

Welchs is named in honor of prominent Golden, Colorado, industrialist Charles Clark Welch, who donated the land for what would eventually become the Colorado School of Mines. Commonly called South Golden, the neighborhood borders the university. “Golden is a college town. There are a lot of professors who live here,” says Jim Smith, a broker and owner of Golden Real Estate. “The neighborhood is within walking distance to the Colorado School of Mines, and that’s probably the number one attraction to this community.”

Prospective home buyers will find several options, including a cohousing community that shares facilities and frequently meets for dinners. Many homes here are also within convenient walking distance of a local high school and outdoor amenities, with prehistoric fossils and remains of the area’s old clay mining days.

Ranch-style homes, upscale Spanish Revivals and Harmony Village

Welchs consists of single-family homes and townhouses, the latter of which make up the cohousing community of Harmony Village. “It’s where a bunch of simpatico people get together to share things like gardening,” Smith says about the village. “They have a clubhouse, where there are meals once a week that are prepared by the group. So, the neighbors actually break bread together once a week.”

Homes in the neighborhood share lots with cottonwood and conifer trees. Housing styles include ranch-style homes, split-levels, bi-levels and cottages with Cape Cod and English Tudor features. There are also upscale Spanish Revivals, and Harmony Village, specifically, has Santa Fe architecture. Smaller single-family homes go from about $700,000 to $900,000, while larger options, including those near the golf course, run between $1 million and $2.1 million. Townhouses go from $700,000 to $1 million, depending on size. Despite the many homes, the neighborhood has more renters than owners.

Finding fossils and activities at Discovery Park

Children enjoy Discovery Park’s playground, where they can climb on brass tortoise and dinosaur skeleton structures. Other park fixtures include a digging pit with dinosaur fossils, a climbing wall and a grass maze. The Triceratops Trail passes by the old clay mining pits’ sandstone walls. Trail users get views of the surrounding hills and pass by fossilized footprints believed to have been left by a duckbill dinosaur and Tyrannosaurus rex. The community also neighbors Fossil Trace Golf Club, which one industry publication touts as having one of the “most fun” 18 golf holes in the country. Upon reaching the public course's 12th hole, players see an impression of the prehistoric palm leaf that inspired the course’s logo.

Bell Middle School requires student enrichment activities

Shelton Elementary School serves the neighborhood and gets a B-plus from Niche. Students may then go to Bell Middle School and Golden High School, which get B-plus and A-minus grades. Bell requires all students to participate in enrichment activities, including a club where students learn how to code and use their creativity to make video games and animations. The neighborhood borders the Colorado School of Mines, renowned for its engineering program.

Welchs is minutes from Golden’s biggest celebrations

The neighborhood is only a few minutes from city celebrations, including Goldens in Golden, when golden retrievers flood the downtown area in early February. The event allows owners and their dogs to mingle and visit restaurants offering special deals. The neighborhood is also a few minutes from Lions Park, the site of the city’s Fourth of July celebration. In addition to the fireworks, the event features live music and various food trucks.

Denver metro commutes on U.S. Highway 6 and I-70

Denver’s Regional Transportation District has a few bus stops in the neighborhood. U.S. Highway 6 borders the neighborhood to the west and gives commuters a route to Boulder, 20 miles north of Golden. Interstate 70 goes toward downtown Denver, 15 miles east. The interstate also takes travelers to the Denver International Airport. About 7 miles east, the CommonSpirit St. Anthony Hospital is one of the nearest medical institutions.

Doughnuts, Tex-Mex options and Nepalese cuisine are nearby

Dining options include Bonfire Burritos, which runs out of a small stucco building with an aqua-blue roof. Patrons dining on the patio will see unique decor like the panel of an old camper. Bonfire is within a 5-minute walk of Santiago’s Mexican Restaurant, which neighbors the strip mall where Peak Donuts is located. These staples are close to Natural Grocers, a Colorado-based chain known for its organic foods. Popular places outside the community include the Sherpa House. The restaurant is in a repurposed American foursquare home decorated to reflect the establishment’s Nepalese culture. The restaurant is near Golden’s historic downtown, which has trendy eateries and boutiques.
