When you look upon the town of Goshen in New York’s scenic Hudson Valley, one might concur with its founders that this community is the “best part of the land.” This rural community, at the heart of Orange County and serving as its county seat, is home not only to an abundance of charming, vintage homes, but also to a strong public school system and the Northeast’s only Legoland theme park.

The village of Goshen was founded in 1714 and became the seat of Orange County in 1727, meaning that this community has been in existence since well before the American Revolution. During the Colonial period, this town became a hub of horse-racing, an activity that defined the town for much of its history; Goshen’s half-mile Historic Track dates to 1838, and has raced horses every summer since its foundation, even as regular events ceased in the 1970s. Goshen’s rich history as a center of harness racing can be explored at Goshen’s Harness Racing Museum & Hall of Fame, which has been telling the story of Orange County’s most famous pastime since 1951.

While Goshen has become a popular option for New York City commuters, this community, located over an hour and a half’s drive outside the city, has mostly retained its semirural charm whilst also becoming home to suburban amenities. Realtor Jimmy Oddone of Sigma Real Estate says, “What I love most about this community is how close it is to everything. You’re about a 10 minutes’ drive from all the supermarkets, malls, Targets, Walmarts, and everything you need. The market is hot.” Goshen’s housing styles reflect this community’s rich, arcadian history, with cottages and colonials conjuring images of Goshen’s colonial origins and newer single-family homes welcoming homebuyers into a modern suburban atmosphere. Homes in Goshen tend to sell within the $450,000 to $600,000 range, above the Orange County average.

As Oddone attests to, this town enjoys a concentration of major conveniences within its downtown area, from a CVS pharmacy to local grocery stores such as the Kwik Stop Food Store. The intersection of Church and Main Streets also serves as an intersection of diverse flavors, from Mexican to Italian cuisines. At the southern end of the town, the Goshen Plaza Diner offers the classic diner experience, with a round-the-clock menu with hearty breakfast options and American-style lunch and dinner choices.

One of Goshen’s newest attractions is the Legoland New York Resort, a massive theme park full of Lego statues such as dinosaurs, the Statue of Liberty, the White House, and even a model of Mount Rushmore. This entertainment center not only houses intricate displays of Lego artwork, but also invites visitors to partake in Lego-themed rides such as family coasters, boat rides, and even water-cannon battles sure to thrill adults and children alike.

Goshen’s students attend Scotchtown Avenue Elementary School from kindergarten through second grade, Goshen Intermediate School from Grades 3-5, C.J. Hooker Middle School from Grades 6-8, and Goshen Central High School from Grades 9-12. Goshen Central’s “Gladiators” attend a school ranked “A-“ by Niche.com, with strong academics and teachers, and strong tennis and mock trial teams.

Goshen residents can commute into New York City within an hour’s drive or bus ride, giving residents the best of both the rural Hudson Valley and the vibrant atmosphere of the big city.
