A classic New England town

Grafton, about 8 miles southeast of Worcester, blends historical charm and modern conveniences in a semi-rural setting. Here, colonial and Victorian architecture dots a forested landscape, and low stone walls run along roads that lead to a grassy town common. Surrounding The Common is a historic downtown, with old churches and a country store. According to Lisa Benway, a Realtor with RE/MAX Vision, “Grafton maintains a country feel with large lot sizes compared to neighboring towns while being in close proximity to services.”

Grabbing grub at the Pub

Historic downtown Grafton exudes New England's historic charm. This quaint area reflects the town’s early development, showcasing a blend of Colonial- and Victorian-era architecture. Strolling along, visitors encounter charming storefronts, antique shops and local eateries. The Grafton Country Store sells all kinds of homemade goodies, from jellies and jams to candles and soaps. The store also has a small café that overlooks the town square. Grafton Common is the centerpiece of this area, and The Grafton Inn, an establishment dating back to the 18th-century is a focal point. The Post Office Pub is a popular restaurant in the area, serving American food from an old-timey bar decorated with U.S. Postal Service memorabilia.

Grab groceries from Stop & Shop at the Country Plaza Shopping Center on Worcester Street. Also in this area is a CVS, Anytime Fitness, a few home improvement stores, banks, gas stations and more, ensuring locals can access everything they need.

Savoring the community spirit

Vendors line The Common for The Grafton Farmers’ Market every Wednesday from mid-June to early October. Pick up seasonal produce and fresh bread for dinner before topping off the trip with a bottle of wine. Around the holidays, the farmers’ market hosts The Holiday Artisan Fair, selling seasonal gifts, food and more. The Grafton Public Library hosts an onslaught of events throughout the year, from art sessions to a mom cookie swap, and The Town of Grafton has a Council on Aging that hosts events for older residents, like mat yoga and line dancing.

Where the old meets the new

There’s a mix of new construction and historic homes in Grafton. Prices typically start in the $500,000 range and run into the millions. Most properties sit in established subdivisions with wide, walkable streets; however, Benway says, “There are a couple of streets that jet off from The Common with historic homes.” Buyers can find a 19th-century home with modern interiors for about $750,000 or a Colonial-Revival property on a cul-de-sac starting around $550,000.

Grafton's green spaces

The Martha Deering Wildlife Management Area spans nearly 180 acres of wooded wetlands and intermittent streams. The park’s extensive network of wide trails gives visitors space to explore, wandering into the surrounding forest alone or with leashed dogs. Hit the links at Highfields Golf and Country Club’s 18-hole course with panoramic views of the Blackstone Valley’s rolling terrain. After the game, grab drinks at The John Henry Tavern, which serves pub-style fare with views of the green, putting and chipping areas. Riverview Park is a small park within the neighborhood with a boat launch into Fisherville Pond, which flows upstream to the Quinsigamond River. There’s also a playground here and two soccer fields.

Opportunities beyond the borders

“A lot of Grafton residents commute for work,” says Benway. “Some to Worcester, some to Providence, even Boston.” Using Massachusetts State Route 146, locals can get northwest to Worcester in about 10 miles or south to Providence in about 35. On Pine Street, an MBTA commuter rail leads into Boston. The Massachusetts Turnpike, or “The Pike” as locals call it, cuts horizontally through the neighborhood and will lead locals out of their cozy semi-rural homes to surrounding areas.
