The center of the universe
East Hills is a thriving residential neighborhood with a growing collection of eclectic restaurants and breweries. The houses are stunning pieces of history that date back to the late 1800s, but the neighborhood is more than the sum of its parts. "I think it's more about proximity," says Mike Smallegan, CEO of Smallegan Real Estate and lifelong Grand Rapids native. "Being close to downtown, being close to East Grand Rapids. I think the houses are something, but it's more about where it is than what it is." Close to parks, good schools and the action of downtown, the residents of East Hills lovingly call it "the center of the universe." Modern upgrades and classic charm blend, and once winter snow melts away, the area is a walker's paradise, providing endless quirks to discover around every corner.
The restaurants and shops of Cherry Street
East Hills residents can leave their doorsteps and stroll to the "center of the universe" in minutes. The particularly walkable Cherry Street is paved with red brick and lined with restaurants like Cherie Inn, where breakfast — particularly eggs benedict — is the specialty. Across the street, at Books & Mortar, the newest hardcovers are available to peruse. Colorful light floods in from the stained-glass window at Brewery Vivant. Operating out of an old funeral home parlor that dates back to 1948, the chapel for beer has flights and American fare. The sunny patio also holds events and markets. Squibb Coffee and Wine Bar is on the area's southern border and serves small plates and charcuterie boards to accompany the espresso-based beverages and wine by the bottle. Tattoo parlors, clothing shops and home décor stores round out the petite shops, and the streets come to life with holiday cheer during the winter. Little markets are around the area, but the nearest chain supermarket, Great Giant, is 2 miles south.

Homes preserved for over a century
The area has seen a steady increase in developments over the last century, giving it architectural diversity and flair. Large multifamily houses from the late 1800s sit alongside Colonial and Victorian Revivals from the 20s. "Some houses have been converted into rental properties, and many of the people living there work in some kind of medical field at 'Medical Mile,' the area's strip of hospitals and medical facilities," Smallegan says. Those looking to set down roots in East Hills can find homes and condos between $200,000 and $475,000. Houses sell after only a week on the market despite being $40,000 more expensive than the Grand Rapids average. Though some homes are over a century old, their residents are younger than average. Bringing a youthful glow to the buildings are recent renovations and pristine and colorful paint jobs to admire on a walk down the tree-lined sidewalks.

Cherry Street leads to Cherry Park
East Hills has an active group behind it: the East Hills Council of Neighbors. The council meets regularly at the neighborhood's central Cherry Park. The organization also hosts a large annual event in the fall at Wealthy Theatre, with food, drinks and giveaways. Cherry Park offers plenty to do with its tennis and basketball courts, shaded picnic tables and playground. On the weekends, local bands can perform for the community that loves to gather. Fuller Park is one mile north and has baseball and soccer fields, as well as an enclosed dog park for playing fetch.
