Improvements from northern neighborhoods trickle down
Considered one of the neighborhoods that make up Boston Square, Fuller Avenue is popular with families and young professionals. The neighborhood is caught between the bustle of urban downtown Grand Rapids and suburban East Grand Rapids. "The area is progressing rapidly," says Heather Huber, the team lead of Heather Huber Homes, who has been selling in the area for five years. "It's on the rise." Here, parents can choose which schools their children attend. Residents also enjoy beautiful parks, a growing restaurant scene and relatively affordable prices for well-kept homes. "The areas north of Fuller Avenue are doing well, and that trend is starting to seep downwards," Huber says. Homes have yet to mirror the high prices seen in northern neighbors like Ottawa Heights and Eastown. Open to change and new faces, Fuller Avenue's small but mighty community continues to grow into a desirable and convenient place to set down roots.

Well-kept houses from the early 20th century
Nearly half the residents of Fuller Ave are renting single-family homes or a unit in Adams Park Apartments. Dutch Revivals and American Foursquares with wide, low-pitched roofs make up most of the housing stock in town, ranging between $190,000 and $350,000. Though the neighborhood saw its heaviest development in the early 1900s, it has stood the test of time and retains beautifully maintained houses on manicured lawns. Yards are on the smaller side, but driveways leading to outdoor parking areas, sheds and patios are standard. "The atmosphere in the neighborhood changes street by street," Huber says. "Some streets have kids playing outside and people working on their lawns. Others aren't there yet but are heading that way," The city's need for housing is evident, given that houses sell quickly. Still, Fuller Avenue has an especially quick turnover rate, with houses spending fewer than two weeks on the market. Those lucky enough to snag a home in the neighborhood have access to well-maintained sidewalks just outside their doors, shaded by mature maple trees that blossom in the late spring.

A coffee shop with a purpose
With local options like Hall Street Bakery and Last Mile Café conveniently located along Hall Street, residents don't have to go far for a morning coffee or delicious pastry. The light-filled Last Mile Café also donates 10% of its revenue to customer-selected charities. 7 Mares serves Mexican fare out of a minimalist, cozy dining room, but the spot is most busy for take-out. Small markets are in the neighborhood, but shoppers can head 1 mile west to Great Giant Supermarket for complete grocery trips. Spearheaded by the Boston Square Neighborhood Association, Boston Square Together proposes redesigning a section of Fuller Avenue to add shopping, dining and housing to the area. The neighborhood association also works to reduce crime, which is slightly above average with a CAP Index score of 5 out of 10 and a homicide rating of 7.

Cooling off at the public pool
Just north of the neighborhood's boundaries, Martin Luther King Park has tennis and basketball courts, a large playground and diamonds for baseball. The public pool is brimming with kids' laughter on warm days as they take a trip on the twisty waterslide that shoots into the shallow end. The large green spaces at Cambridge Park and Mulick Park are great for picnic dates, and the shady trails winging through them are popular among joggers and dog walkers. Anglers head 3 miles east to fish off the long docks at Reeds Lake.
