A grand city near Grand Rapids

Situated halfway between the regional center of Grand Rapids and the lakeside city of Holland, the West Michigan city and commuter hub of Grandville combines Holland’s close-knit environment with a retail scene on par with a major urban center. “It has a great smalltown feel, though there’s a lot to do here,” says local Realtor Vaughn Greathouse of Five Star Real Estate says. "You get to know your neighbors and the places you can go walk and hang out.” Home to just over 16,000 residents, Grandville is more than just a smaller counterpart to the larger Grand Rapids, but home to a close-knit community with access to amenities from shopping and dining to parks and annual festivals. Greathouse adds, “It’s a very simple lifestyle, and a lot of people really enjoy living here.” This tranquility, together with this city’s ease of access to Grand Rapids just 7 miles away, contributes to Grandville’s growing appeal.

Grandville get-togethers

Grandville’s community spirit is perhaps best expressed through its wealth of annual festivals. During the holiday season, a parade with floats, live animals, North Pole houses and carolers fills Chicago Drive, which transforms into a Christmas market. The celebration's main event is a tree lighting ceremony, during which the Grandville High School Marching Band plays holiday music. In the spring, the city hosts an Art & Chocolate Walk downtown. Attendees can stroll through town to peruse arts vendors, listen to music and snack on chocolates. Other city events include an Easter egg hunt and food and live music nights.

Fishing and frolicking at Grandville's parks

Grandville is dotted with greenery, meandering streams and stunning views of the Grand River, which winds alongside the city. Key outdoor spaces include the 14-acre Wedgwood Park, with lighted athletic fields, playgrounds and picnic areas. Buck Creek Trail follows Buck Creek, which runs through the park's south end for 2 miles and allows for hikers and joggers to immerse themselves in nature. At the 19-acre Heritage Park, a paved walking path winds around a stocked lake for fishing. Kids can also make use of the park’s playground and sports grounds for their enjoyment.

"Main Street" and mall shopping

Grandville is home to an abundance of shopping and dining, both along its main thoroughfares and in large shopping centers. Chicago Drive is lined with popular restaurants, including the Rainbow Grill, a classic American dinner which has maintained its old-school décor and menu since it opened in the 1940s. On the city's south side is Grandville's business district, with major retail stores and grocery chains, including Lowe's, ALDI and Target. Greathouse says, “RiverTown Crossings is one of the biggest malls in West Michigan; it’s a great place to shop and hang out. People come from Grand Rapids and Holland just to eat there, and the Costco is there.”

Vintage homes and variety

As a city with a suburban feel, Grandville’s housing market includes homes close to the shopping centers and office buildings of the business district, as well as houses with spacious yards and picturesque views in the Grandville Lakes subcommunity. Older bungalows and Arts-and-Crafts homes can sell for as little as $170,000 and even slightly over $300,000. Larger midcentury homes begin around $300,000, while newer craftsman homes, ranch-style homes and Tudor Revivals can eclipse $800,000. Following national trends, Grandville’s median home price has significantly risen over the years, increasing from $212,548 in January 2020 to $318,507 by January 2024.

Getting into Grand Rapids

Grandville is often called a commuter hub since U.S. Interstate Highway 196 runs through the north end of town. Greathouse says, “Most people in West Michigan would agree that Grandville’s greatest strength is its location. It’s centrally located right between Grand Rapids and Holland, so getting to and from different areas is a huge highlight.” Commuters can reach the heart of Grand Rapids within a 7-mile and 15-minute drive, giving them access to the big city’s employment and cultural scenes. Grandville is also served by Grand Rapids Public Transportation's Rapid buses; stops can be found along Fairlanes, Canal, Wilson and Ivanrest Avenues, Prairie Steet and Chicago Drive. To travel internationally, residents can travel about 10 miles east to Gerald R. Ford International Airport.

Public safety

According to FBI data, the Grandville Police Department reported a violent crime rate that is less than half that of the state and national figures, although the property crime rate is well above the state and national rate. The police department operates a Citizen Police Academy to create a more responsible and proactive citizenry, helping homeowners develop their own strategies to stay safe.
