Surrounded by the mountains and the Great Salt Lake is Grantsville, a rural town 36 miles from Salt Lake City. This rural community, with its wide, country pastures, has a population of about 12,000, making it the second most populous city in Tooele County. “Grantsville is an absolute cow town, with lots of farms and quaint restaurants,” says Rodney Moser, broker/owner at NextHome Navigator, who has nearly three decades of local experience. “You’ll see cows daily, and every once in a while, you’ll get stuck behind them during traffic.”
In 1850, James McBride and Harrison Severe discovered the area after traveling from Missouri to present-day northern Utah. Today, people are still gradually settling down in Grantsville; the city’s population grew by about 72% between 2010 and 2023. “People are moving here for more affordable homes with bigger lots; they can get a house for a fraction of the price compared to nearby areas,” Moser says.
According to the Department of Workforce Services, Tooele County’s major employers are the Tooele School District, Walmart and the U.S. Department of Defense. Grantsville’s median household income is $97,000, higher than $80,000 nationally.
