Granville offers country living and close-knit community in the Berkshire foothills
The community of Granville offers quintessential Hilltown living on the southwestern edge of Massachusetts. The rural farming community is surrounded by state forests in the Berkshire foothills, a rolling, densely wooded area about 30 miles east of the Appalachian Mountains’ famous Berkshire Highlands. While houses might be acres -- or even miles -- apart, residents enjoy a close-knit community. “It’s a very different vibe up in the Hilltowns compared to the suburbs,” says Kim Landry, a Realtor with Real Broker. “You have a bit of a slower pace of life up there, a small-town feel. People own animals like chickens, goats and horses, and just tend to want to relax, be in nature and enjoy the outdoors.”

Local and family-owned establishments at home, commercial options in Westfield
The family-owned Granville Country Store has been a fixture since 1851. It’s open daily, offering locally produced goods, daily essentials and a menu of homestyle meals, from Italian dinners to classic breakfast fare. In season, residents are minutes away from the fresh apples and peaches ready to be picked at Mountain Orchard. Down the road, sweet treats are available at Gran-Val Scoop, a family-owned ice cream shop on a family farm that’s been running since 1903. The local watering hole, Daggers Meadery, is a newer addition serving a variety of homebrewed honey wines. For familiar chains like Big Y and Walmart, Westfield is roughly 15 miles away. The city also has the closest emergency room, located at Baystate Noble Hospital.

Up the road, hikers can find one of Phelon Memorial Forest’s trailheads. This forest is particularly popular for the view at the top of Blueberry Hill, an almost 1,500-foot summit.
