Green Level is a small but growing Alamance County town with rural roots

Incorporated in 1990, Green Level has grown from a rural area to a small town of about 3,000 people. Within commuting distance of larger cities like Greensboro, Durham and Burlington, Green Level has attracted residents thanks to its newly constructed homes priced below the nationwide median. “Folks are buying houses for the convenience,” says Wylie Bean , broker/owner at A.W. Bean & Co. “It’s fairly central to the Triangle, Chapel Hill, even the eastern part of the Triad. And it’s cheaper than Orange County, so they’re moving to Alamance County.”

New and old single-family houses in subdivisions

Green Level homes typically sell for between $175,000 and $335,000 and largely consist of single-family houses built from the 1960s to today. Common styles include brick ranch-style houses, cottages and contemporary homes. Green Level Mobile Home Park has manufactured homes, and there are other newly constructed manufactured homes throughout the town. Manufactured houses cost between $125,000 and $275,000. Bedford Hills subdivision, completed in 2019, introduced more than 200 homes on quarter-acre lots. “Since Green Level has town water and sewer, a little denser building is possible,” Bean says.

Recreation at Green Level Municipal Park and Graham-Mebane Lake

Green Level Municipal Park has ADA-approved playground equipment, basketball courts, a football field and volleyball pit for town residents . “We’re trying to create a healthy living space,” says Barrett Brown, Green Level's town administrator. He says that the town is continuing to invest in the park. “We’ve got a beautiful fountain with koi fish in it, we’re planning to build our own gymnasium and we are transforming our horseshoe pit into a pickleball court.” The park also hosts youth sports, including the Green Level Trojans, a football team for ages 5 to 12 .
Just east, Graham-Mebane Lake provides drinking water for Green Level and surrounding towns, but it’s also a popular recreational area. The 650-acre reservoir has canoe and kayak rentals, fishing and picnic areas.

Juneteenth celebrations and more town events

Green Level's largest annual event is its Juneteenth celebration, held at the town park. The event features vendors, a band and fireworks. “It’s just a good time to be had by all,” Brown says. The town also hosts smaller seasonal events like movies in the park, trunk-or-treating and an Easter egg hunt. “We try and provide enough programming so people don’t always have to travel out of Green Level to enjoy themselves,” Brown says. Green Level’s new community center also hosts monthly bingo, and residents can rent the space for birthday parties and baby showers.

Food Lion and Dollar General are among the nearby businesses

The Food Lion and Dollar General just off Yanceyville Road fulfill residents’ basic needs, and Ez Go Mart has convenience items. Just across the street from Food Lion and just outside the town’s boundary, Crazy Mexico serves favorites like quesadillas and tacos in its colorfully decorated venue. Although dining options in Green Level are limited, Brown expects more shopping and dining to crop up once Alamance Community College’s Public Safety Training Center opens along Sandy Cross Road in Summer 2025. “It’s going to be training fire, police and EMS workers from all over the state. I anticipate some growth because they need some place to go for lunch,” he says. For more shopping, Mebane’s Tanger Outlets has dozens of shops 10 miles east.
There is also a rock quarry just outside the town’s boundary, though Brown says sound isn’t a common issue for residents. “I understand there are some underground vibrations that are rattling the pipes a bit, but nothing audible,” he says.
