Desert city with canyon parks and riverside recreation
Canyons tower over Green River, a Western city drawn to the outdoors with 11,500 residents. "People love Green River because of its sense of community," says Amanda Allred, an area local and broker associate at Rocky Mountain Realty. "It is a really nice small town where you know everyone, and everyone is like family." Surrounded by desert scenery, all-terrain vehicles can be seen, as can kayaks on the river in the Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area. This city also has some of the largest trona mines in the country, which employ many. "Young blue-collar families move here and upscale their homes," Allred says. "There's very few places you can build in Green River because it's landlocked by public lands and mountains in the gully."

Mining trona ore in the Green River Basin
The mining industry thrives due to the Green River Basin, which has trona ore and soda ash. "It's a huge industry. We hold the largest trona mine reserve in the world," Allred says. "They send it out in powder form, and it goes into soap, toothpaste and glass." The industry employs thousands in Sweetwater County at companies like Tata Chemicals, Genesis Alkali and FMC.
