Greendale is growing its business district and suburbs

Don’t sleep on Greendale, Indiana. Just 25 miles west of Cincinnati on Interstate 275, Greendale is a suburb with a lot happening. “We get labeled as a bedroom community, but I really don’t see that,” says Development Director for Greendale Angela Walters. “We have a lot of businesses and with the Greendale Main Street project underway, even more will be coming to downtown.” With solid schools and plenty of recreation, it’s clear why Greendale is a sought-after suburb. “We’re close to Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky, you can be anywhere in 20 minutes.”

Tree-lined streets hold Historic Registry homes and new condos

Detached, ranch-style homes on the south side of town start at $110,000, while brick builds further north are in the $300,000 range. “Many of the homes were built in the 1800s or early 1900s and are on the National Historic Registry,” claims Walters. A larger, four-bedroom home at the end of a cul-de-sac on the northern edge of town goes for nearly $700,000, while new condos near Schnebel’s Park are on the market for $250,000. Homes are on heavily gridded streets and feature large lawns and driveways. Mature oaks and willows shade the flat sidewalks, making it a pleasant walking area.

Lawrenceburg schools have top teachers in the county

Greendale children head to the Lawrenceburg Community School Corporation, beginning at Lawrenceburg Primary, which earned an A- on Niche. Central Elementary was given a B-plus rating by Niche and was honored as having the top teachers in the county. The 15:1 student-to-teacher ratio is better than the national average. According to Niche, Greendale Middle School has a B-minus Niche rating, and Lawrenceburg High has a B rating and the 12th best teachers in the Cincinnati area.

Local parks offer September farmers markets and fishing lakes

Lawrenceburg Newtown Park is home to events such as Arts and Crafts in the Park, held in September, and is also the location of the neighborhood farmers market, which runs Saturdays from June through September. There are plenty of benches and chess tables set up for residents to play a game near the park’s calming fountains. For some pickleball or tennis action, residents head to Ludlow Hill Park. The Park also features two catch-and-release fishing lakes and walking and jogging trails. Kids can play on the climbing equipment and the swings at Arch Street Park, while George Street Park is a great spot to shoot hoops and have a picnic using a community grill.

Speedway, casino and cinema offer year-round entertainment

Greendale also features plenty of alternative recreational activities. Racing fans can head to Lawrenceburg Speedway, which has hosted dirt-track races since 1950. There are typically two race days per month, so there are plenty of opportunities to feel the need for speed. Hollywood Hotel and Casino of Lawrenceburg is a great spot to place a wager. The casino features slots, a sportsbook and traditional casino table games. Dance the night away at the '70s-themed disco club in the hotel or take in some live music at the hotel's rooftop stage in the summer months. Greendale Cinema is an excellent spot to grab popcorn and catch a flick.

Dining options include Greek fare, craft beer and comfort food

Greendale residents head to Proof 124 Table and Tavern to try local beers and signature appetizers; flights are a great way to try multiple brews, and the Bavarian pretzel and buffalo chicken rangoons are favorites among regulars. Zobras has plenty of traditional Greek offerings like gyros and souvlaki, but save room for some baklava or almond cookies. For a hearty breakfast, lunch or dinner, Howie’s Diner has you covered with biscuits and gravy, burgers and fried chicken options. Highway 50 is the place to go shopping, as many nationally recognized chain stores are off the main drag. Kroger and Aldi are both options to stock up on groceries for the week ahead. For household needs and more, Walmart has you covered. Shoppers can hope to find a great deal at the Tri-State Antique Market or Hummingbird Boutique Antiques.

GreatSchools: The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
