Fifteen miles outside St. Louis are the short, parallel streets of Greendale. Incorporated in 1950 and home to fewer than 1,000 residents, many who move here tend to stay. “It’s an older neighborhood. Many of the people currently living in Greendale grew up there,” explains Realtor Leah Foster of Coldwell Banker. One of the area’s defining characteristics is its proximity to the University of Missouri-St. Louis, just a half mile away. A golf course under renovation and multiple parks are also within reach here. Despite its convenient location and amenities, house prices remain far lower than the national average.
Greendale offers an affordable array of homes
Like the surrounding suburbs, dozens of single-family homes are evenly spaced on similarly sized lots. A few different house styles appear along Greendale’s handful of streets, set behind sidewalks ideal for a quick jog or dog walk. These houses typically feature single-car driveways and attached garages. Walk down the street and see the small brick Colonial Revivals, some of which have second stories covered by vinyl. Cape cods with steep roofs are also common in this area. On the north side of the community are a few bungalows and more ornate revivals with columns and lush yards, creating a calm and predictable aesthetic and atmosphere. “It’s an affordable neighborhood offering peace and quiet,” says Realtor Miracle Johnson of Coldwell Banker. Houses range from an absolute low of $48,000 to a high of $190,000.
