How Greenfield compares in price and style to neighboring towns
Greenfield has a broad mix of housing styles and prices. “You'll find historic homes closer to downtown, established midcentury neighborhoods, and many 1990s to present subdivisions that offer typical move-up housing with yards,” says Greenfield native Hart Summeier, owner of Level Up Real Estate Group. “There is also ongoing new construction, plus semi-rural properties on the edges of town.” The median sale price is $300,000, lower than the New Palestine median of nearly $400,000 and the McCordsville median of roughly $420,000. “Many buyers feel that Greenfield can offer more home for the money than McCordsville, and it is often competitive with New Palestine depending on neighborhood, home age and finishes,” Summeier says.

Greenfield Central High School serves students.
Schools include public and private options
Greenfield-Central Community Schools serves the area. The district is currently restructuring to save money and optimize efficiencies at their existing buildings, an effort that includes combining two intermediate schools and two elementary schools. Kids can graduate from Greenfield-Central High School, which has a student-run radio station and dual-credit classes. St. Michael Catholic School, a private option in the area, serves prekindergarten through eighth grade.
Sweet Shop donuts and other must-try spots in Greenfield
“On the shopping side, Greenfield covers most day-to-day needs in-town, and it is close enough to Indianapolis-area retail corridors that you can access broader options without turning it into a major trip,” Summeier says. You’ll want to get to Sweet Shop early if you want some of the city’s best donuts — they open at 4 a.m., and a roster of regulars and farmers means they’re usually picked clean within a few hours. “The Sweet Shop is one of those local places almost everyone mentions when describing Greenfield,” Summeier says. Downtown Greenfield has plenty of places to eat, including:
Wooden Bear Brewing Co., a relaxed spot for drinks
Carnegie’s Restaurant, a fine dining eatery in a former Carnegie library
Mozzi’s, a sports-themed staple for pizza
The Depot, an American restaurant in a renovated grain elevator
State Route 9/State Street is lined with chain restaurants and big box stores like Walmart, Aldi and Kroger. State Street also has local spots like Don Rigo, which serves up classic Mexican fare, and Hitherto Coffee and Gaming Parlour, a coffee shop and board game store that hosts events.

Access to Interstate 70 and local employers
Commuters are drawn to Greenfield for its proximity to Interstate 70, which can get drivers to downtown Indianapolis in about 30 minutes. But Greenfield has its own employers, including Amazon and Hancock Regional Hospital. Growth along the I-70 corridor and the nearby Mount Comfort Logistics Center have added jobs in manufacturing, fulfillment and distribution.

Riley Park is city’s main park with a playground, pool, skate park, sports courts and sledding hill in the winter. The Pennsy Trail offers 5.5 miles of paved paths along the former Pennsylvania Railroad. Brandywine Park is a go-to for sports, while the Thornwood Nature Preserve offers a relaxed setting for walks and bird watching. Golfers can hit the links at Arrowhead Golf Course and Hawk’s Tail of Greenfield. The Hancock County Library has a beloved children’s section with playhouses and a teen’s section with board games and video game consoles. Riley Festival celebrates a famous Hoosier poet
Poet James Whitcomb Riley — the creator of Little Orphan Annie and Raggedy Ann — was born and raised in Greenfield in the mid-19th century. The Riley Festival celebrates the poet every October with more than 450 exhibitors selling food, arts and crafts in the square around the county courthouse. The Hancock County 4-H Fair is held every year at the fairgrounds just behind Riley Park. During the fall, people from around central Indy flock to Tuttle Orchards, a pick-your-own orchard and fourth generation family farm. While it’s open year-round, fall is a particularly popular time of year with apple and pumpkin picking, hayrides, corn mazes and kids activities.
