A small Americana town in Arkansas

Greenland is a slice of rural Americana tucked away in the rolling hills of the Ozarks just south of Fayetteville. The town got its start more than a century ago as a small farming village and has since grown to over 1,200 residents with its own school district and several public parks. And while it has a classic, country vibe, it’s an easy, 5-mile commute to downtown Fayetteville and the University of Arkansas. The town is also home to Drake Field, a small, public airport that previously served as the primary airport for the region until the construction of the Northwest Arkansas National Airport in 1998. “Greenland’s still got that old town feel. It hasn’t grown up like Fayetteville has,” says Realtor Margie Moldenhauer of Re/Max, who has worked in real estate in northwest Arkansas for more than four decades.

Ranch-style homes with expansive yards

Homes in the village are lined along leafy, residential streets with views of forests and meadows stretching into the distance. Most are ranch-style homes with two- or three-bedroom floorplans that typically sell for between $150,000 and $300,000 depending on whether the home has been renovated. There are also newer, upscale homes in the area as well, some built as recently as 2021, that can list for between $400,000 and $600,000. Residents have plenty of room for landscaping and gardening — homes are situated on lots that range from a quarter-acre to upwards of an acre. Moldenhauer says Greenland's low price point is a big draw for homebuyers. "If you move to Greenland, you’re going to pay a lot less than if you live in the city," she says.

Hike, bike or play sports at Kessler Park

Outdoor enthusiasts will enjoy the proximity to Kessler Mountain Regional Park, just north of Greenland. The park encompasses 620 acres of land and includes a sprawling nature reserve with 10 miles of hiking and biking trails that crisscross the park’s rugged slopes. It also features baseball diamonds, soccer fields and a playground where residents can take the kids for activities. Locals can also head about 5 miles east to the shores of Lake Wilson Park, a popular spot for fishing, boating and hiking nestled amid timbered hillsides. For a little bit of Arkansas history, residents might swing by the Arkansas Air and Military Museum at Drake Field. It features an array of old planes and aviation equipment, as well as temporary exhibits.

Many extra-curriculars in Greenland

Young students can attend Greenland Elementary School and Greenland Middle School, both of which hold C ratings from Niche, an online school review site. Upperclassmen attend Greenland High School, which holds a B-minus rating and offers plenty of athletic and extracurricular programs for students to participate in, including cross country, softball, cheer, football, basketball and band. All three schools are located next to one another adjacent to Drake Field airport.

Commute down Interstate 49

Interstate 49 runs vertically through Greenland. It’s a major regional freeway that makes for an easy commute to the city and surrounding suburbs. It’s just 5 miles to Fayetteville’s many cultural attractions and the University of Arkansas, one of the city’s largest employers.

Find all essentials in Fayeteville

Greenland offers very little in the way of shopping and dining — there’s a Sonic Drive-in, a McDonald’s and a gas station near an on-ramp for Interstate 49. For everything else, residents will have to hop on the highway and head about 5 miles to Fayetteville for shops like Walmart, Ozark Natural Foods and Whole Foods Market. For a night out, breweries, bars, upscale restaurants, art galleries and museums can all be found along the walkable streets of the city’s downtown.
