Carriage Hills
Well-maintained, spacious brick homes
Sloping streets set along gentle hillsides wind through Carriage Hills. This woodsy suburb is complete with tree-lined streets and homes on large lots, typically at least a quarter acre. Beneath the canopy cover, lawns are finely manicured with landscaped floral beds and shrubs, with no sidewalks to take away yard space. Most houses here were built between the 1970s and ‘80s and tend to be spacious, with an average size of roughly 2,500 square feet. Stately Colonial or Georgian Revivals nestle alongside brick ranch-style homes and a handful of contemporary or New Traditional constructions. List prices range from the low $300,000s to just above $700,000.Next door to Guilford College, a private Quaker university
Carriage Hills addresses are zoned to Guilford County Schools. Jefferson Elementary earns a B-plus from Niche, while Western Guildford Middle scores a B-minus and Wester Guilford High receives a B. Western Guilford High has served students of Guilford County since 1968 and was the first school in North Carolina to host the AP Capstone Program. It’s also home to an Academy of Transportation, Distribution and Logistics, where career-ready students can get a head start in their field. Carriage Hills is just east of Guilford College, a private liberal arts college with roughly 1,500 undergraduate students. “It’s sort of in between the other universities in Greensboro in terms of size,” says William Nicholas, a Realtor with Real Broker LLC. “They’re also a Quaker school, and the campus has more of a suburban vibe still.”Embrace the outdoors at Price Park
Carriage Hills Park is within walking distance of many neighborhood homes. This tiny, forested park provides plenty of shade for sunny afternoons on the playground or swing set. There’s even a chess table, though players must bring their own sets. For long walks through varied landscapes, Price Park offers walking trails through forests and meadows. The park is home to a meadowlark sanctuary and a butterfly garden, making it an excellent place for wildlife watching for experienced birders and inquisitive children alike. At the heart of the park’s grounds lies the Kathleen Clay Edwards Family Branch of the Greensboro Public Library. In addition to all the typical library features, this one embraces its unique location to offer educational materials and events about the nature surrounding it. For extra amenities and social hours, some residents purchase memberships with Pinetop Neighborhood Resort to take advantage of its pool and pickleball courts.Big-box stores at Jefferson Village and New Garden Crossing
Retail centers are abundant along New Garden Road, a central thoroughfare about a mile outside of the neighborhood. Between Jefferson Village Shopping Center and New Garden Crossing, which sit directly across the street from one another, residents pick from big-box stores such as Lowes Foods, Target, the Fresh Market, Michaels and Marshalls. Though there are plenty of chain restaurants to choose from, a couple of local spots are also tucked into the strip malls. New Garden Bagels Co. is known for bringing New York-style bagels to the South, with classic flavors such as everything or cinnamon raisin bagels to unique spins including rosemary olive oil or apple walnut raisin bagels. On busy weeknights, Mario’s Pizza is the go-to for local delivery. Hidden away in Quaker Village, another shopping center just southwest of Carriage Hills, is Carolina’s Diner. This Greensboro mainstay is a reliably busy breakfast spot on weekends, known for its vintage flair and Southern specialties. “Carriage Hills is also close to Friendly Center, which is an outdoor mall,” Nicholas says. “That’s where you’ve got Macy’s, Cheesecake Factory and all of that. It’s one of the top spots people go to for food and shopping.”Equidistant from Piedmont Triad International Airport and Downtown Greensboro
Residents generally need a car to navigate this suburban neighborhood, though there are some places within biking distance. Joseph M. Bryan Boulevard is a major arterial road that runs north of Carriage Hills and connects to Interstates 73 and 840 near Piedmont Triad International Airport, roughly 6.5 miles west. Downtown Greensboro is 6 miles east, making for a 15-minute commute. Other Triad cities are also within commuting distance, with Winston-Salem about 23 miles west and High Point approximately 14 miles south.
