From African American mill village to convenient location close to downtown Greensboro
Like many of the neighborhoods around it, East White Oak owes its creation to the various mills owned and operated by brothers Moses and Ceasar Cone, titans in the American textiles industry. The Cone Mills White Oak Plant was the largest, a major manufacturer of selvedge denim – a high-quality of denim with a “self-edge” to prevent fraying – named after a prominent 200-year-old oak tree. Several company villages were built surrounding the mills, and East White Oak was one of them, though most of the original homes have been torn down. “East White Oak was originally a mill village for the African American workers at Cone Mills. Over the years, it has become more diverse and multicultural,” says Alice Drake, financial management director at the East White Oak Community Center. Today, buyers are brought to the neighborhood to enjoy a short commute to downtown Greensboro and shopping centers and participate in the community programming offered by the community center.

A small community with modest homes on modest lots
A smaller suburb, East White Oak has fewer than 150 homes and a quiet housing market. Streets follow a gridded layout and branch off White Street. Almost all homes are bungalows or ranch-style, with the occasional Cape Cod or two-story Colonial Revival. Most were constructed in the 1990s or early 2000s, but along White Street is a strip of cottages from the ‘50s. The average home offers just under 1,200 square feet of interior space, which is well below the national average of about 1,900. The median lot size is roughly 7,840 square feet, or less than a quarter of an acre. Several homes have front porches. Homes are priced between $160,000 and $225,000.

The East White Oak Community Center brings neighbors together
Formerly Cone Mills’ schoolhouse, the East White Oak Community Center now serves as a neighborhood events center. “We’re now an affordable rental venue for community residents. The center is available for celebratory events, including family reunions and holiday dinners.. Two churches hold weekly services on the site,” Drake says. “Grant funding has enabled the center to create an art studio which will host art classes for the community, with an emphasis on older adults. In addition, there will also be language classes, technology literacy for older adults and a tutorial program for youth.” The center is also home to a mini museum with a permanent exhibit honoring David Richmond of the Greensboro Four, the four organizers of a sit-in to protest racial segregation, and “Tightly Woven,” an exhibit which celebrates the East White Oak community. Located only half a mile south of East White Oak, Autumn Park offers a small playground, benches and an open field for play. There’s also the Village at Northside Park, another pocket park with a small playground and a community garden. The Greensboro Sportsplex invites athletes to play on basketball and volleyball courts as well as four indoor soccer fields and roller hockey rink. Various youth and adult teams play at the facility, which is also available for open play.
