Englewood Forest
Ranch-style homes blend into a mature forest
Englewood Forest is a suburban community true to its name, with mid-20th-century housing seamlessly blending into the thick of a rich, green forest. Most homes follow ranch-style designs, with occasional split-levels and Colonial Revivals. Houses usually date back to the 1960s through the ‘70s—the median square footage hovers around 1,600, a bit below the national average of 1,900. A few homes off Beaverbrook and Yorkshire drives allow residents to enjoy views of a small pond from their backyards. Almost all detached homes go between $200,000 and $300,000.Shops along Old U.S. 421 and downtown eateries
Martin Luther King Jr Drive, which transitions into Old U.S. 421, houses Food Lion, Walmart Neighborhood Market and a few fast-food options such as McDonald’s and Biscuitville. The area also has an Ocean Blue Seafood Restaurant, known for its fried popcorn shrimp and fish fillet dishes. More eateries in Downtown Greensboro, such as Dame’s Chicken & Waffles, serve Southern-style cuisine like shrimp and grits and chicken and waffles. At the Boxcar Bar and Arcade, patrons enjoy craft beers, pizza and vintage and modern arcade games from air hockey to Skee-Ball. The venue regularly hosts events such as music bingo nights and live concerts.A distinguished NJROTC, naval science and post-secondary education
George C. Simkins Jr. Elementary is within a 2-mile drive of many homes. The school receives an overall C-plus rating from Niche, Southeast Guilford Middle gets a B and Southeast Guilford High earns a B-plus. Southeast Guilford High offers a Naval Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps program emphasizing service, citizenship and leadership. Students can study naval science and related courses and participate in military drills. The school’s NJROTC cadets were named a distinguished unit from 2010 through 2022 and named the third-best in the nation in 2020. North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, a historically Black university, and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro are both 5 miles northwest.Adventures at Barber Park and a prominent golf course
Barber Park is just across I-40, inviting kids to cool off in the “sprayground” splash pad or explore the playground. The park is also popular for its disc golf course, seasonal outdoor concerts and event center, which can be rented for private events. Gillespie Golf Course offers 18 holes and is only a 3-mile drive west; however, the grounds will be closed indefinitely for repairs following Hurricane Debby, which touched down in summer 2024. Alternatively, golfers can visit Forest Oaks Country Club 7 miles south. The facility’s golf course hosted the PGA Tour Wyndham Championship from 1977 through 2007. The club also offers racket courts, a fitness center and a barber shop. The Greensboro Summer Solstice Festival
The Greensboro Summer Solstice Festival is a city highlight. It typically takes place in June at the Greensboro Arboretum and Lindley Park. The event features local vendors, food, live performances and an hour-long drum circle.Close to Interstate 40 and Greensboro’s beltway
Interstate 40 bounds the neighborhood to the north. Entrance and exit ramps are within a 2-mile drive of all homes. Commuters can take this highway east to Interstate 840. Ramps to Interstate 85 are 3 miles south. Along with I-840, I-85 forms a 40-mile loop around Greensboro. Guilford Health Care Center, a physical rehabilitation facility, is a few miles west. For medical emergencies or routine appointments, the Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital is 7 miles northwest.
