Grandover
Residents stay active at Grandover Swim & Racquet Club
Residents can access Grandover Resort's amenities, including its two public 18-hole golf courses, East and West. David Graham, an Australian golfer who won the 1979 PGA Championship and the 1981 U.S. Open, and Gary Panks, a decorated course architect, designed the courses to flow over the neighborhood’s lush hills. Rabe says it’s common to see people walking the course after hours to catch the sunset. Hardwood trees surround Grandover Swim & Racquet Club, where residents play tennis and pickleball, swim in the pool or take a group fitness class. They can recharge with a visit to the day spa. The large lake at Oka T. Hester Park is about 3 miles from the neighborhood, offering fishermen four piers to cast their lines. Summer thrill seekers can enjoy the slides, wave pool and water chutes at Wet ‘n Wild Emerald Pointe Water Park. “It’s about 5 to 8 minutes down the road. It’s been there for a while, but it has new ownership. They put in new slides. It’s a huge attraction for kids,” Rabe says.Golfers visit Grandover for the Wyndham Championship
Each August, professional golfers and their fans descend on Grandover and the neighboring Sedgefield community for the Wyndham Championship. This televised PGA Tour event is held at Sedgefield Country Club, which features an 18-hole par 71 course designed by Donald Ross. While Grandover doesn’t host the championship, Rabe says the resort hosts related events and is buzzing with activity throughout the week. “This is the biggest PGA Tour event that this community sees,” Rabe says. “It brings a lot of people to the area. Restaurants, area hotels and party rental companies see a rise in business, and some people rent their homes out to golfers.”Picking up essentials at Grandover Village Shopping Center
The neighborhood shopping center, Grandover Village, is anchored by a Publix Super Market. Residents can pick up pet supplies at Petsense by Tractor Supply or get a manicure at Vinci Nail Spa. Familiar chains, including Chick-fil-A, Chipotle Mexican Grill and Starbucks, offer a quick bite. The nearby Sedgefield Village Shopping Center is host to several local restaurants. Elizabeth’s Pizza is the casual spot for a pie and pasta, while Bon-Bon Wings & Grill serves up saucy chicken wings with pints of beer. At the resort, residents can enjoy elevated Southern fare at Finial at Grandover or have a casual meal at Café Expresso East. The Gallery at Grandover highlights artists from across North Carolina and features paintings, hand-crafted jewelry and pottery. 1808 Bar is known for its handcrafted cocktails, including the smoked “Jamestown Fog” made with Woodford Reserve, brandied cherry, orange bitters and cherry vanilla simple syrup. Residents can drive about 6 miles to Four Seasons Town Center, a three-story mall featuring dozens of familiar brands like Journeys, JCPenney and H&M.From quaint cottages to grand estates
The upscale nature of the resort extends to the grandiose homes that line the neighborhood's wide, gently curving streets. “I just love the architecture here. There are different styles from Tudor to midcentury modern,” Rabe says. With French door entryways framed by large columns, custom estates feature square footage well above 4,000 and often have golf course views. These homes, adorned with high-end finishes, such as crown moldings, 10-foot ceilings, and curved stairways, sit at the top of the market, ranging from $800,000 to more than $1 million. Modern transitional builds and spacious brick homes fall between $550,000 and $775,000. Colonial Revival and ranch-style homes range from $400,000 to $550,000. Small two-bedroom cottages are also available from $300,000 to $400,000. Rabe says some subdivisions come with HOAs, which can attract buyers looking for minimal maintenance. Monthly fees are around $300. She adds that Grandover is a community of runners and walkers with several miles of smooth sidewalks illuminated by streetlights. “Everybody is going to wave at you,” she says.Quick access to the Greensboro Urban Loop
Golf carts are used to traverse the neighborhood, but residents get in the cars to travel around Greensboro. Interstate 85 is close by and connects to Interstate 73, the Greensboro Urban Loop, which circles the city. Downtown Greensboro, host to 1,300 employers, is about 10 miles away. “We have great highway access here. It’s only a 10,15, or 20-minute drive to reach anywhere in Greensboro,” Rabe says. She adds that traffic on I-85 is minimal. “Greensboro almost has an overabundance of roads. We don’t get the backups like what I see in Raleigh or Charlotte.” Cyclists often pedal down the tree-lined Grandover Parkway for a scenic ride. “There are some pull-offs where people can park their cars. I see people biking along there all the time,” Rabe says. Greensboro Transit Agency bus stops are available outside the neighborhood along West Gate City Boulevard. Piedmont Triad International Airport is about 14 miles north.Millis Road Elementary’s “Millis Men”
Guilford County Schools offers families educational choice, meaning students can go to their neighborhood schools or choose a personalized pathway. Students in Grandover are zoned for Millis Road Elementary. The school earns an A-minus from Niche and features the “Millis Men” mentoring program, focusing on social and emotional learning. Fifth and sixth grade boys meet monthly to learn life skills, develop positive relationships and hear from community guests who share different perspectives. Jamestown Middle receives a B-minus and offers after-school clubs for various interests, from chess and pep band to cheerleading and running. Lucy Ragsdale High gets a B-plus and is known for its competitive soccer teams, winning multiple state championships. “They’ve had the same soccer coach for 20 years. He was there when I was there,” Rabe says. Ragsdale sits across from Guilford Technical Community College, offering associate’s degree programs, workforce development and adult education. Rabe says West Chester Country Day School, Wesleyan Christian Academy and Greensboro Day School are popular private options for students in the neighborhood.
