From Quaker settlement to blossoming Greensboro suburb
Named after the only Quaker-founded college in the southeastern United States, Guilford College is a large westside suburb of Greensboro with roots that run deep. “There was a Quaker community there during the American Revolutionary War,” says Robert Canner, owner of Robert B. Canner Real Estate and 38-year-resident of the Gate City. “A lot of the wounded were tended there by the Quakers. Many local alternative practitioners say there’s a healing vortex in the area.” But one thing’s for sure: new infrastructure is promising to unlock the neighborhood’s full potential. “It’s really blossomed with the emergence of New Garden Road and new housing development,” says Todd Turner, Realtor with All About You Realty who has been selling properties for 3 years. “You have everything here from townhouses to high-end listings and everything in between.”
To the west of Guilford College lies the Piedmont Triad Airport complex.

Quaker Acres, Westwind Area and other subdivisions comprise Guilford College
Guilford College consists of a few smaller subdivisions such as Quaker Acres and Westwind Area, each with its own distinctive flavor. “Quaker Acres is a good, walkable subdivision,” says John Nosek, Realtor with Berkshire Hathaway and lifelong Greensboro resident. “Big, mature trees dot the landscape, but the community has above-ground power lines, so you do have the potential of storm winds knocking them down.” Westwind Area sits on the other side of West Friendly Avenue. “It’s a really nice neighborhood. It’s not one people ask for by name, but people gravitate to it based on pricing,” Nosek says. Across all subdivisions, home types are similar, with ranch-style, raised ranch-style and Colonial Revival builds being the most common. Occasionally, buyers will come across Cape Cods, split-levels and Tudor Revivals. The median parcel size stands at just under a half an acre.
Most single-family homes fall between $200,000 and $400,000, though dwellings with at least 2,500 square feet can get up to around $550,000. Several townhouse communities are spread across the neighborhood such as Brownstone and Carriage Crossing. The average townhouse spans about 1,600 square feet. Prices usually range from $175,000 to $300,000, though larger builds can get up to about $400,000. Condo units go for between $140,000 and $250,000.

Getting an early start at Guilford College
Guilford Elementary and Western Guilford Middle both receive overall C-pluses from Niche, while Western Guilford High earns a B. The high school’s Signature Academy of Transportation, Distribution and Logistics teaches students the ins and outs of supply chain management and how to operate drones. The program adopts a highly hands-on approach to education, with a Skill Boss Logistics trainer and a forklift simulator. Students can graduate with industry credentials and land internships with partnering businesses. The neighborhood’s namesake institution, Guilford College, was founded in 1837 as a boarding school, becoming a post-secondary, liberal arts institution in the 1880s. The school offers over 30 majors such as business administration, cyber and network security and Latin American studies, as well as a few graduate programs such as criminal justice. The institution is also home to The Early College at Guilford, which Niche awards an A-plus and ranks as North Carolina’s best magnet high school and the state’s third best public high school. For their upperclassmen years, students take classes at Guilford College and can earn up to two years’ college credit on top of a high school diploma.

East of Interstate 840 and Piedmont Triad International Airport
Interstate 840 bounds the neighborhood to the west, running south to Interstate 73. Along with Interstate 85, these three highways form the Greensboro Urban Loop, a 40-mile beltway which orbits the city. Piedmont Triad International Airport is on the other side of I-840, within a 6-mile drive of most homes. “There is some noise, but homes aren’t in the flight path of planes,” Nosek says. “You’ll hear some noise if you’re outside, but the planes won’t be flying directly overheard. Also, planes generally stop coming in after 9 p.m., so it’s quieter during nighttime.” Greensboro Transit Agency bus routes 7 and 9 make stops within the neighborhood, following West Friendly Avenue and West Market Street, respectively. Both lines pass through Downtown Greensboro and terminate at the J. Douglas Gaylon Depot, commonly known as the Greensboro station.

Walking down Bicentennial Greenway, playing sports at Leonard Recreation Center
The grounds of Guilford College are popular for afternoon strolls, and trails abound on the campus’ forested east side. A notable feature hidden among the trails is the Underground Railroad Tree, a tulip tree old enough to have been standing when Quakers assisted freedom seekers make their way to the North. Price Park invites hikers to explore additional trails, along with a bird and butterfly meadow. Residents might even expect a nature encounter if they scout out the owl boxes. Greensboro’s Bicentennial Greenway runs parallel to the King George Branch creek. Fifteen miles in total, this trail is broken up into a few gravel and asphalt sections on the west side of Greensboro and in High Point. Parking is available just north of Quaker Acres at the Leonard Recreation Center, which offers a gym and playground, along with regular activities such as a youth basketball league, sewing group and badminton club. Skaters hit the rink at Skateland USA, located just east of Interstate 840. The facility also offers birthday party packages, which include skate rentals, pizzas and drinks.
