Lake life in Lynwood
The Lynwood neighborhood of Greensboro offers homebuyers a chance to live in a rural setting while enjoying all the conveniences of downtown, about 20 minutes away. The majority of homes are part of the Lynwood Lakes subdivision, a string of 50-year-old housing surrounding this neighborhood’s vast central lake. The Lynwood Lakes subdivision is a hidden gem, according to Lynwood Lakes homeowner and Realtor Chris Pappalardo of the Chris Pappalardo Team. “Lynwood Lakes is a really small neighborhood, and people don’t know it exists,” he says. “You pay about half as much in county taxes, but you are located right outside the city limits. And you can still get homes in that neighborhood for $225,000 and up, so it’s still shockingly affordable.” In addition to peaceful, wooded neighborhood streets and a serene lake setting, Pappalardo says the community puts on four or five social events a year, like ice cream socials, barbecues, and a Fourth of July party. Also of note: Lynwood has a CAP Index crime risk score of 1 out of 10, compared to the national average of 4.
What to expect when house-hunting in Lynwood
Circling the lake, house hunters will find spacious properties, some of which feature water access through small piers and docks. According to Pappalardo, the majority of homes were built in the late 1960s and early 1970s on acre-sized properties; later, about 15 to 20 newer homes were added on smaller lots. “In the past ten years, the neighborhood has gone through a resurgence. People have been renovating their properties and doing amazing things,” Pappalardo says. “Many homes are still traditional brick ranches, so they have smaller bathrooms, bedrooms, and closets, but some have been modernized, and there are several completely redone million-dollar houses on the lake.” Because of the variety in what you might find, homes typically range from about $280,000 to $625,000. Prospective residents should note that to use the lake, they must join and pay dues to the voluntary homeowners association, which only manages the lake itself.
Recreation opportunities in the county
Of course, the lake is a huge outdoor amenity for residents of the Lynwood Lakes subdivision, provided they’ve paid their HOA fees. On nice days, residents often spend their time out on the lake fishing, kayaking, paddle boarding, boating, water skiing, and swimming. The private beach and shelter are the perfect spot for picnics and cookouts. Landlubbers may appreciate the neighborhood’s proximity to Forest Oaks Country Club. The country club’s golf course is deemed a favorite stop on the PGA Tour and was host to the Greater Greensboro Open for 30 years. Open to the public, the rolling green of the course has been a challenging hit for golf enthusiasts since its opening in 1962, and the aquatics center, tennis courts, and restaurants on-site round out the experience. In addition, just a couple of miles south of Lynwood is Hagan-Stone Park. The 400-acre park is a playground for outdoor activity. With four fishing ponds and miles of hiking trails, residents can bring their poles and hiking boots to enjoy a day outside. The park also has an aquatic center with a large pool and slide.
Shopping and dining options available to Lynwood residents
A few miles down Liberty Road — about a 10-minute drive — is Alamance Crossing, a shopping center with retail spots like Walmart Supercenter where residents can get all the necessities, as well as a handful of chain restaurants. Continue on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive to reach Downtown Greensboro, loaded with locally-owned places to grab a bite, plenty of options for nightlife, and a couple of new parking decks for convenience. Or, hop on the highway close to home to get to Friendly Center, an outdoor shopping mall about 10 miles away, or Tanger Outlets, a longer drive at 33 miles but a great place to score some deals.
Public schools available to Lynwood learners
Students in Lynwood attend Guilford County Schools such as Alamance Elementary School, which received an overall grade of A-minus from Niche, before going on to attend Southeast Guilford Middle School, which received a B, and Southeast Guilford High School, which received a B-plus. At Southeast Guilford High, students can participate in various extracurriculars, whether it’s testing their wit at the quiz bowl, playing a game of Dungeons and Dragons in the Falcons and Dragons club, or letting their creativity shine at the art club.
Getting around the area
Most Lynwood residents will need a car to get around the greater area, as public transportation in the area is limited. Interstate 85 runs right by the neighborhood and connects to Interstate 40, so trips to Raleigh and the region at large are easy. Residents can hop on Liberty Road to head toward Greensboro’s downtown, about 8 miles away. The neighborhood is also a straight shot down Route 421 to Toyota’s new battery manufacturing facility in Liberty, which Pappalardo says is bringing many new jobs to the area. Greensboro also has its own international airport, Piedmont Triad International Airport, within 25 miles of Lynwood.
