A quiet-paced community

The intersection of Cherry Lane and Countryside Drive in Rankin Area is as amicable as it sounds. This is a slow-paced neighborhood, with just a handful of streets, a couple of stoplights and a single gas station less than 5 miles from Greensboro’s bustling city center. Aside from the whistle of an occasional train on nearby tracks, Rankin is a peaceful place with sizable lots, mature shade trees, quiet streets and sidewalks. In early spring, azalea blossoms turn many front yards into a riot of pastel colors.

The Saura and Keyauwee Indians were the first inhabitants of the general area. European settlers arrived in the 1700s. In 1898, Revolution Mill, the first flannel mill in the South was opened by Moses and Ceasar Cone. Just 2 miles from Rankin Area, the mill helped make the Greensboro region the center of the North Carolina textile industry. Although the mill was shuttered in 1984, it has recently undergone a revival into a multi-use space, home to restaurants, businesses and cultural events.

Solid homes on a spacious lots

Throughout Rankin Area one finds a variety of brick ranch-style homes of 2,000 square feet or less built between the 1940s and 1970s. Houses on Rankin Road have some of the area’s larger lots, often more than a half-acre. Off Rankin Road is the area’s only official subdivision – Coventry Glen. Here, houses sit on woodsy lots under the shade of trees on Cherry Lane. For the most part, property values in the Rankin Area are consistent. A 3-bedroom ranch may sell for $190,000, while a 4-bedroom brick colonial may run about $320,000.

“Rankin is a very charming neighborhood with a lot of well-built older homes that are being upgraded,” says Alina Spaulding, a Broker with Berkshire Hathaway and longtime resident of Greensboro. “With large lots and a price point just over $220,000, this is a great place for everyone — young families, singles and retirees.”
