A quiet-paced community
The intersection of Cherry Lane and Countryside Drive in Rankin Area is as amicable as it sounds. This is a slow-paced neighborhood, with just a handful of streets, a couple of stoplights and a single gas station less than 5 miles from Greensboro’s bustling city center. Aside from the whistle of an occasional train on nearby tracks, Rankin is a peaceful place with sizable lots, mature shade trees, quiet streets and sidewalks. In early spring, azalea blossoms turn many front yards into a riot of pastel colors.
The Saura and Keyauwee Indians were the first inhabitants of the general area. European settlers arrived in the 1700s. In 1898, Revolution Mill, the first flannel mill in the South was opened by Moses and Ceasar Cone. Just 2 miles from Rankin Area, the mill helped make the Greensboro region the center of the North Carolina textile industry. Although the mill was shuttered in 1984, it has recently undergone a revival into a multi-use space, home to restaurants, businesses and cultural events.
Solid homes on a spacious lots
Throughout Rankin Area one finds a variety of brick ranch-style homes of 2,000 square feet or less built between the 1940s and 1970s. A 3-bedroom ranch may sell for $190,000, while a 4-bedroom brick colonial may run about $320,000.
