Convenient suburb in northwestern Greensboro
Saddlecreek may sit on the far northwestern corner of Greensboro, but proximity to Interstate 840 and Joseph M. Bryan Boulevard put locals surprisingly close to most of the city’s most popular amenities, including Piedmont Triad International Airport, which is only a 6-mile drive away. “Saddlecreek is a very nice neighborhood in a great location,” says Rania Mushahwar, Realtor with S&R Realty who has been in the business for 12 years. “Not only does it have a great school district, with proximity to some of the best schools in Greensboro, but the people are great. The neighborhood is very family oriented.” Two schools in the neighborhood’s public education pipeline receive overall A-minuses from Niche. Residents are also within 3 miles of Caldwell Academy, a pre-kindergarten through 12th grade private school ranked by Niche as the second best Christian high school in the Greensboro area.
A mixture of homes on gentle homes
Saddlecreek’s wavy residential streets branch off Horse Pen Creek Road, leading to a diversity of homes on lots a third of an acre in size. “Saddlecreek has a good mix of architectural stylings and larger yards. Most were built in the 1970s and early ‘80s and are two-story, though there are some one-stories,” says John Nosek, Realtor with Berkshire Hathaway who has been selling homes around the Triad for 8 years. “Homes are generally very compartmentalized and don’t have a lot of open-concept designs.” Perched on gently sloping hills, homes follow a mix of Colonial Revival and ranch-style designs, with the occasional split-level or Cape Cod. Colonial Revival houses tend to have attached driveways capable of accommodating two vehicles, while ranch-style homes usually have no garage and a single-car-wide driveway. Home prices tend to range from $275,000 to $500,000. Because of the neighborhood’s low inventory, homes don’t sell very often.
Well-rated public schools with private options and a nearby college
In August 2024, Claxton Elementary’s new campus was unveiled following a $300 million project bond. Open space characterizes the new facility. Each classroom has sliding glass doors and much of the open first floor is overlooked by balconies, which serve as collaborative workspaces. Claxton Elementary earns a B-plus from Niche, while Kernodle Middle gets an A-minus and Western Guilford High scores a B. Western Guilford was the first public high school in the state to offer the Advanced Placement Capstone Program. Students take a rigorous course load of AP courses, on top of a seminar where students develop critical thinking skills and a research class where students produce an academic thesis. Caldwell Academy sits a few miles up Horse Pen Creek Road, a private, pre-kindergarten through 12th grade school which offers faith-based education. Niche gives the school an A and ranks it as the second best private Christian high school in Greensboro. Guilford College, a private liberal arts higher education institution founded by Quakers, is 3 miles south of Saddlecreek.
The Greensboro Urban Loop helps locals get around
Ramps to Joseph M. Bryan Boulevard are less than a mile south of the neighborhood. Piedmont Triad International Airport is 6 miles west down this highway, while Downtown Greensboro is 7 miles southeast. Commuters are 3 miles from Interstate 840, which forms the northern half of the Greensboro Urban Loop. “Our town, left to right and top to bottom, is about 10 miles by 10 miles, so with the loop, you can usually get anywhere you want within 15-20 minutes,” Nosek says.
A shopping center is in Saddlecreek’s back yard
Garden Creek Center sits just south of the neighborhood, home to a Harris Teeter, hair salon, veterinarian and several restaurants such as Phoenix Asian Cuisine and Rio Grande Kitchen & Cantina. Additional shops are less than a mile down New Garden Road, from retailers like Target and Office Depot to grocery stores like The Fresh Market and Lowes Foods. Eateries in the area include Kickback Jack’s, a sports bar beloved for their burgers and wings, and New Garden Bagel, which Yes! Weekly readers voted as the second-best bagel shop in the Triad in 2024. More shopping centers are 1.5 miles up New Garden Road from Horse Pen Creek Road. Giacomo’s Italian Market offers specialty groceries while Nerdbombers’ inventory includes toys, comics and collectibles.
Sports centers, parks and trampolines
Located up Horse Pen Creek Road, Proehlific Park was founded by National Football League player Ricky Proehl and his wife Kelly. While the complex was opened so kids could enjoy safe, free athletic play, the center has expanded to include various programs for all ages, such as after school care for children and Pilates classes. Children slam dunks and evade dodgeballs all while hopping around at Sky Zone Trampoline Park, located at Jefferson Village Shopping Center. The facility also offers birthday party packages. Carolyn S. Allen Regional Park and Athletic Complex features four baseball/softball diamonds, concession stands and picnic shelters. Youth tournaments frequently take place at the complex. About a 4-mile drive east of Saddlecreek, Country Park invites visitors to ride pedal boats, cast fishing lines in the pond, hike nature trails and learn about North Carolina’s flora and fauna at the Greensboro Science Center which is located on the park’s grounds. A free shuttle runs through the 400-acre park seasonally. Price Park is more of a local option, not much more than a mile south of the neighborhood. This smaller green space is home to additional hiking paths and a butterfly garden.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
