Mid-Country East
Multi-million-dollar homes built throughout the past century
Custom-built estates sit far back from Mid-Country East’s winding, asphalt roads. “The whole area is zoned for 1-to-2-acre lots, but people have bought up more and more acreage over time, so now you can get a house on 10 or more acres,” Burke says. Ivy grows up thatched-roof English-style manors from the 1920s. Stone walls surround six-bedroom 1950s Colonial Revivals backing up to swimming pools and tennis courts. Wooden docks stretch behind early 2000s shingle-style homes alongside the private Frye Lake. Pink dogwood trees and white hydrangea bushes dot grass lawns in front of 8,000-square-foot Tudor-style dwellings built within the last decade. Houses on 2 acres typically start at $3 million, while homes with more land may cost upwards of $10 million. Two-bedroom condos near Putnam Avenue typically cost between $1 million and $1.5 million.
Golfing, swimming and tennis at Greenwich Country Club or Burning Tree Country Club
With an initiation fee of $125,000, Greenwich Country Club is situated on 165 acres of rolling terrain. “It’s invitation-only, and even then, you’ll still probably be on a waitlist if you’re trying to join,” Burke says. Dark blue lounge chairs and white pergolas surround the swimming pool here. Tennis balls whack against black clay courts at the racquet sports complex, which also has separate paddleball and pickleball courts. Evergreen trees line the 18-hole golf course, featuring numerous water hazards alongside Greenwich Creek. Burning Tree Country Club on Perkins Road has an initiation fee of $85,000. A 3-meter diving board sits over the pool, where synchronized swimming classes and water polo matches are held every summer. Sand bunkers and oak trees dot the 18-hole golf course’s bent grass fairway. Members can eat upscale American fare and enjoy golf course views under the patio’s striped black-and-white awning.Locals can play hockey at the Greenwich Skate Club or drive to Greenwich Point Beach
Besides country clubs, Mid-Country East is home to a few other community gathering spots. Parents watch from the clubhouse as youth figure skaters twirl and hockey teams play on the Greenwich Skating Club’s outdoor rink during the winter. On Putnam Avenue, a local art gallery and a coffee shop called The Café comprise the three-level Greenwich Library, while the YMCA of Greenwich’s Greek Revival-style building has a fitness center and indoor pool. Locals can also relax on the Long Island Sound’s sandy shoreline at Greenwich Point Park, a public beach about 7 miles southeast of Mid-Country East.Highly rated Greenwich Public Schools and several private options
Children can attend North Street School and Central Middle School, both of which have A grades from Niche. Students may continue to Greenwich High School, which offers more than 32 Advanced Placement classes, like Italian, music theory and environmental science. The neighborhood also has several kindergarten through 12th-grade private schools, like the Colonial-Revival Greenwich Country Day School or the Greenwich Catholic School, associated with St. Michael the Archangel Parish. Founded in 1827, Greenwich Academy on North Maple Avenue is the oldest all-girls school in the state. Its all-boy high school counterpart, Brunswick School, is just two blocks away on Maher Avenue, though its elementary and middle school campuses are 7 miles north on King Street.Putnam Avenue for grocery shopping and Greenwich Avenue for designer stores
Grocery stores like Acme, Whole Foods and Stop & Shop are along Putnam Avenue. The street is also home to several luxury car dealerships and fast-food restaurants like Dunkin’ and McDonald’s. Built in 1858, the Second Congregational Church is a Gothic Revival-style building on Putnam that also has a daycare. Sometimes called downtown Greenwich, Greenwich Avenue is a half-mile-long strip of locally owned restaurants and upscale retailers, like Saks Fifth Avenue, Aritzia and Tory Burch. Crystal chandeliers hang from the tiled, arched ceiling at MOLÌ, a Chinese restaurant in a former bank from 1915. Wood and red leather booths fill Putnam Restaurant, where patrons have enjoyed diner-style food since the 1980s.Easy access to New York City and New Haven
Mid-Country East is a car-dependent community, as residential streets don’t have sidewalks. The Connecticut Turnpike is about 5 miles south, making New York City another 35 miles south and New Haven 45 miles north. About 3 miles away on Railroad Avenue, the Greenwich MTA Station follows the Metro-North Railroad with several stops in New York and Connecticut. The closest Connecticut Transit bus stops are along Putnam Avenue. Greenwich Hospital is along Perryridge Road, and the Westchester County Airport is about 8 miles northwest.
