Sitting in the Appalachian Mountains, Gregg Township is a rural community in Centre County made up of farmland and bordered by massive state forests. The county was created from parts of the surrounding Huntingdon and Northumberland counties after the American Revolutionary War. In the late 1700s, the iron mining industry began and was a major export for over a century. As the local iron industry declined, farming became the main business for the area. Over the past 30 years, there has been an increase in the number of large, single-family homes in the township. “Most of the surrounding land is still farming or residential,” says Jeanine Schleiden Watson, executive business director of Penn’s Cave, Inc, a popular township attraction.
Hiking and swimming at Poe Valley State Park
Penn's Cave and Wildlife Park offers guided boat tours of the popular limestone cave. The park, which has been open since 1885, also features an animal safari and a labyrinth. “It takes approximately three hours to go through both tours,” says Watson. Poe Valley State Park, located 5 miles east of the township, is a 620-acre green space surrounded by Poe Lake. The park gives access to 3 miles of trails as well as swimming and boating in the lake. The area is also less than 15 miles from the rest of Centre County’s recreation spots, including Tussey Mountain for skiing and the Nittany Country Club with its 18-hole golf course.
