Griffith was once nicknamed “the town that came to the tracks” during its rise as a railroad hub, but experienced a redevelopment thanks to a booming small business culture. Today it's a dense suburb in northern Indiana, about 30 miles south of downtown Chicago. Griffith is also home to multiple parks and green spaces.

Multiple parks dot the community, ranging from a quarter acre to 15 acres. Griffith is also proud of its bike path, named the Erie Lackawanna Trail. The road has stores like Kohl's, Marshall's, Nordstrom Rack, Ulta and Lowe's. Major thoroughfares include Interstate 94, I-65, U.S. Route 41 and U.S. Route 30. Chicago is 32 miles away and Chicago O'Hare International Airport is 53 miles away. Medical care is about 6 miles away at Community Hospital.

Annual events in Griffith

Griffith puts on events in Central Park throughout the year. Starting in May, the Griffith Central Market is held every Friday through mid-September, featuring live music, food trucks, craft vendors and kid-friendly activities. July ushers in the 4th of July Parade and Park Full of Art, a juried show for oil paintings, sculpture and photography. Also around this time of year is the popular Broad Street Blues and BBQ Festival. The first Saturday of August brings Symphony in the Park, featuring a performance by the Northwest Indiana Symphony Orchestra. Every Labor Day weekend, locals can attend the Rock ‘N’ Rail Music and Street Festival. Then in the fall is Griffith Oktoberfest, complete with a pumpkin patch and authentic German cuisine.

A landmark army tank and a control tower

Another unique attraction in Central Park is the historic army tank parked next to a war memorial honoring America's veterans. The tank was built toward the end of World War II and has been sitting in the park since the late 1950s. The Griffith Historical Park and Train Museum is dedicated to the area's industrial past, showing visitors how Indiana shipped steel around the country. Make sure to check out the historic control tower that organized rail traffic for more than 75 years.
