Rural Massachusetts region alongside the Merrimack River
On the banks of the Merrimack River, the rural landscape of Groveland spreads across northern Massachusetts near the New Hampshire border. The perimeter of the region is dotted with nature reserves and parks, while homes are mostly centered around several main roads radiating off Main Street. “The draw of Groveland is honestly the community,” says Nick Silvestri, a Realtor with Keller Williams Evolution and the Silvestri Properties Group. “It’s the type of town that has yard sales every weekend, farmer stands and things like that. There are lots of kids’ sports and it’s a family-based community.” Homes are often surrounded by sizable yards, and thickets of trees are interspersed throughout the area, making for a quiet atmosphere. Despite the seeming remoteness of the area, Interstate 95 sits just east of Groveland and links the area to Boston, less than 35 miles south.
Charming lampposts line the streets in the heart of Groveland, adding a warm, nostalgic glow to the town’s picturesque and inviting downtown area.

Serene streets and residential properties in Groveland
A number of homes in Groveland date to the early 20th century, with some even going as far back as the 1700s. “The majority of the area are colonial-style homes and Cape Cods,” Silvestri says. “They are spread-out, so the majority have a big front yard, back yard and garages. There are a lot of cul-de-sacs and dead-end streets, so it’s great for families.” In addition to the typical New England-style architecture so prevalent here, potential buyers will also find some ranch-style homes. The median lot size here exceeds 24,000 acres; those large lots paired with the area’s quiet streets allow younger residents to play outdoors. While current prices typically fall between $600,000 and $900,000, Silvestri points out that prices tend to lean towards the higher end of that spectrum, even exceeding it in some instances: “It’s a very sought-after area of the North Shore of Massachusetts. I would say the average is between $800,000 and $900,000 for resale; there is a lot of new construction going on, and those homes are $1 million or more.”

Recreation in the great outdoors or at sports fields
For those seeking even more outdoor activity than a backyard can offer, Groveland offers residents plenty of options. “There is a lot of outdoor recreation in the area,” Silvestri says. “There are a lot of parks, public areas and trails for hiking, walking and biking.” In southwestern Groveland, Johnson’s Pond is popular with kayakers, canoers, boaters and anglers. Veasey Memorial Park lies on the shores of Johnson’s Pond and has hiking trails, picnic areas and slopes for winter sledding. Parts of the Crane Pond Wildlife Management Area sit in eastern Groveland, with the nature reserve spanning over 2,500 acres throughout northern Massachusetts. Crane Pond itself and the Parker River provide more opportunities for water-based recreation.
Along the Merrimack River, the Pines Recreation Area has two baseball fields, basketball courts and a playground. Across the river, Riverside Park offers pathways winding amid nearly a dozen ballfields. The complex also has a hybrid baseball and football field, as well as several basketball courts. The members-only Renaissance Golf Club. And given its location near the Massachusetts coast, Groveland offers proximity to plenty of sand and surf. “It’s not too far from Salisbury Beach and Hampton Beach, which are really popular in the summertime,” Silvestri says. Both beaches are less than 20 miles east.

Everyday shopping needs typically require a drive of a few miles. “A lot of people will go right over the border to shop,” Silvestri says. “There is a Market Basket, a Whole Foods and a ton of restaurants in that area.” Many locals here also head to New Hampshire, due to the state’s lack of sales taxes, but the Groveland area is continuing to develop. “They’re doing a lot more with the town in terms of updating it,” Silvestri says. “There are a lot of new restaurants that will be opening up soon in the area to liven up the nightlife, where they’re going to start having live music and bringing that back.”
Pop into Nick’s Place on the outskirts of Groveland for a made-to-order sandwich or a slice of their hand-tossed pizza, served fresh and full of flavor.
