Groveport offers small-town charm less than 15 miles from Columbus

Groveport is a Columbus suburb that embraces its charming atmosphere. You can spend hours outside at one of the many parks in the area or meet up with friends at community events like the Apple Butter Festival. The local restaurants along Main Street offer plenty of options for a night out. Downtown Columbus is less than 15 miles away, making it easy for commuters to get to work.

Homes in Groveport cost less than nearby communities

The homes in Groveport range from historic houses near Main Street to newer construction. “One of the cool things about Groveport is the variety,” says Realtor Diane Todd with Howard Hanna Real Estate Services, who has been working in the area for six years. The oldest homes include Foursquares and bungalows from the early 1900s. As you move farther from the city center, you’ll find ranch-style houses and other mid-20th-century houses, as well as newer subdivisions with New Traditional homes. “That mix makes it appealing for a wide range of buyers – from people who love character and charm, to those who want something newer and more turnkey,” Todd says.

The median price for a single-family home is less expensive than that of the nearby Canal Winchester. “Buyers are often able to get more home for the money here – whether that means a bigger yard, more square footage or a newer home – while still being close to Columbus and major commuting routes.” Prices for a move-in-ready home range from the high $100,000s to the high $400,000s, depending on size and condition. There are some condos, which can cost between the low $200,000s and the low $300,000s.

Residents come together at local parks and community events

Groveport residents have no shortage of opportunities to get outside. Options include:

  • Three Creeks Metro Park, where amenities include athletic fields, trails and a playground
  • Walnut Woods Metro Park, which spans nearly 1,500 acres and has a dog park, kayaking and sledding
  • Alum Creek Trail, an almost-25-mile-long multiuse path with a trailhead in Three Creeks Park
  • Heritage Park, which is home to the Groveport Community Garden and has a picnic shelter and a fishing pond
  • Degenhart Park, one of many smaller parks with a playground
“Beyond the parks, Groveport has a strong sense of community with things like holiday parades, local events and the farmers market,” Todd says. One of the most popular celebrations is Apple Butter Day, held at Heritage Park every October. Festivities include live music, hayrides and craft vendors. The Groveport Farmers Market is every Thursday evening between mid-July and mid-September.

Main Street is home to local restaurants like Little Italy

“Main Street is the heart of Groveport,” Todd says. “It has that historic, small-town charm and locals take a lot of pride in it.” You can find a mix of cafes, restaurants and other businesses, including:

  • Little Italy Ristorante, a community staple since 1979 that is known for its pizza
  • Main Ground Coffee, which has signature items like the Iced Main Ground Mocha
  • Birch Tavern, a family-owned bar and restaurant that opened in 1831
  • Delaney’s Diner, which serves diner classics for breakfast and lunch
Main Street is anchored by the restored Groveport Town Hall, which Todd says is a standout of the city. “It’s a beautiful historic building that includes a museum and art spaces, and is used for community events and programs,” she says. Rarey’s Port is one of two mixed-use buildings that are part of 1847 Main, the city’s revitalization project that hopes to bring in more local businesses.
