Grovetown is a small city on the outskirts of Augusta. In the late 1800s, railroads connected the community to Augusta, enabling it to develop into a popular rural retreat for city dwellers. “It used to be very wooded, but it has grown tremendously,” says Charlie Andrews, a Realtor with ERA Wilder Realty, who has lived in Grovetown for about 10 years. For modern-day buyers, it offers a lower cost of living compared with neighboring Evans and a higher-rated school district than the one in Augusta. “The school system really sets things apart,” Andrews says. With Fort Gordon nearby and several major manufacturers in the area, residents also have access to numerous job opportunities.

From farmland to modern suburban developments
Before 1980, central Grovetown was relatively well developed, but farms and forests covered much of the surrounding area. As Fort Gordon expanded and factories cropped up in and around the city, the demand for housing also increased. Since 2010, the number of homes in the community has nearly doubled, and some developments are still underway. The city’s more established neighborhoods have gridded streets lined with mature trees. Ranch-style homes and bungalows are common, and properties tend to be spacious, sometimes featuring long, private driveways. Curving streets and cul-de-sacs give the newer developments a traditional suburban feel, and housing options include Craftsman-style bungalows, Colonial Revivals and a few townhouses. The median sale price is approximately $320,000, which is significantly lower than the median sale price of $430,000 in Evans. Homes built before 1990 typically sell for between $110,000 and $460,000, depending on their condition and the size of the lot. Newer construction options may range anywhere from $160,000 to $820,000. Certain parts of the city are prone to flooding, and lenders may require flood insurance.

Local parks offer paved trails, ball fields and space for water play
At Liberty Park, residents have access to multiple ball fields and a community center with an indoor gym. Cyclists and runners sometimes head to the Euchee Creek Greenway, a paved multiuse path that winds near the creek. Gateway Park opened in 2020, and it is one of the most popular green spaces. “A lot of kids go there to do their sports practices, and adults get their walks in,” Andrews says. “The splash pad is a real big hit in the summertime.”

Variety of chain restaurants and grocery stores in Grovetown
Shopping and dining options are mainly clustered along Wrightsboro Road and near the interstate. Locals have a wide selection of fast-food and sit-down chains, such as Culver’s and LongHorn Steakhouse. Andrews recommends Miyako Steak House and Sushi Bar, which serves everything from cajun-spiced shrimp to sushi. There are also several hardware stores and grocery stores, including a Kroger Marketplace just north of the interstate. The two-story Augusta Mall, located less than 10 miles east, offers additional retail and dining.

Seasonal events at Liberty Park
The city’s recreation department holds seasonal gatherings at Liberty and Gateway parks. Notable events include the Summer Jam and Fireworks Show in early June, a trunk or treat in October and a Christmas festival in December. Concerts and rodeos take place in Liberty Park, and the Columbia County Exhibition Center hosts sports tournaments and trade shows.
Columbia County Transit
Columbia County offers a limited, by-request shuttle for residents, but most people depend on cars for travel. Drivers have access to several main roads, including Wrightsboro Road, U.S. Route 78 and Interstate 20, and Andrews says that traffic can be a concern during peak travel times. “Living here, you know when and when not to go out,” he says. Although the train depot is no longer in operation, trains still pass through the area, causing traffic delays and noise pollution. One of the largest employers in the region is Fort Gordon, situated just southeast of the city. The base is home to the U.S. Signal Corps and the U.S. Army’s Cyber Center of Excellence. Other major employers include John Deere and Serta, both of which have factories in Grovetown. Downtown Augusta is roughly 15 miles away. There are several hospitals in Augusta, and the Wellstar MCG Health Medical Center is a Level 1 trauma center. Augusta Regional Airport is less than 20 miles east.
