Rural living with proximity to Huntsville and outdoor recreation

Gurley is a small close-knit community 16 miles east of Huntsville. “The area is very quiet and just about everyone knows each other,” says Kimberly Powell, a Broker/Owner for Powell Realty Co, Inc. Powell has lived in the north Alabama region and has been in the real estate business for over three decades. “When I moved here, I really liked the community, and that’s why I stayed,” says Powell. “It is an old, rural town with a good mixture of recreational opportunities like hiking and kayaking.” Moss Lumber Industries is a lumber mill that brings in many employees from the area. Homeowners also enjoy proximity to the region’s many lakes and rivers as well as Cathedral Caverns State Park, a state-wide attraction marked by its striking 25ft-high entrance

Charles Stone Park is a convenient spot for walking

Four laps around Charles Stone Park in downtown Gurley should equal a mile, and Fido is allowed on the trail as long as he is leashed. The park also has a playground and plenty of green space. In summer the most convenient spot for cooling off is the Gurley pool, which is open Tuesdays through Sundays from Memorial Day weekend through the end of July. Swim lessons are offered, and the pool area can be reserved for parties. The nearby Lost Sink Trail is a four-mile round-trip hike through the forested Keel Mountain Preserve, which is protected by the Nature Conservancy. The trail passes a scenic waterfall that drops into a sinkhole. The nearby Flint River is popular with kayakers and anglers.

Busy Highway 72 links to Huntsville

"Highway 72, the main drag, is so connected to everything. It’s only minutes to the Huntsville Hospital," says Terri Coté, Realtor with Keller Williams Realty and 30-year resident of the Tennessee Valley. “It’s very convenient to Huntsville,” Cote says, and a good fit for people who want a more rural environment with easy access to outdoor recreational activities on nearby lakes and rivers.
