Hadley: a scenic university town
Hadley, Massachusetts is best known for its colonial farmhouses, proximity to several universities and… asparagus. That’s right: this field-filled town was once known as the asparagus capital of the world. It even has a unique nickname for asparagus: "Hadley Grass." Hadley is bordered by the Connecticut River to the west and the University of Massachusetts–Amherst to the east. Right across the river is Smith College, a private women’s university. Closer to Hadley are Hampshire College and Mount Holyoke College. Hadley also includes the Hockanum Rural Historic District, full of farmland properties that have been in use for hundreds of years.
“Many who move here are employed at UMass or Amherst College,” says Sally Malsch, a Realtor for the past 29 years, currently at 5 College Realtors in the neighboring town of Amherst. “A second demographic comes from Amherst and Northampton folks looking for an area that is lower in taxes and more scenic. Hadley has the scenic appeal, tax appeal and employment appeal.” Officially incorporated in 1661, about 5,000 residents today call Hadley home.
Grab brunch along Route 9
Many of Hadley's businesses are located along Route 9, which rolls east to west through town. The Stables Restaurant offers brunch options, such as ham and mushroom scramble and spaghetti and meatballs. The Hampshire Mall, which has a movie theatre, is also along Route 9. For everyday essentials, the Mountain Farms Shopping Mall has a Whole Foods and a Walmart. “With Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s, Hadley is the center of shopping for the area,” says Malsch.

And when it’s time to kick back and have some fun, locals can watch the UMass teams play football at the McGuirk Alumni Stadium or hockey at the Mullins Center. The Asparagus Festival is held every summer at the Hadley Town Common. For a fun evening out, The Quarters has vintage arcade games and cocktails.
Cape Cods along the Connecticut River
Hadley homes tend to be spread apart with large yards. Sidewalks and bike lanes are not prevalent. Along the Connecticut River, a median separates the two streets that houses were built along. Hadley is home to large Cape Cods, colonials in cul-de-sacs, ranch-style homes and split levels, as well as farmhouses and backyard barns. Homes both old and new are available: some were built in 1840; others were built in 2017. One might find a three-bedroom ranch-style in the $300,000s or a five-bed, six-bath Colonial Revival home for $982,000. “Homes in newer subdivisions cost between $700,000 and over $1 million; professors and professionals in the area often purchase these homes,” says Malsch. Lots are available for around $165,700. Closer to Amherst, apartments are also available, starting at $1,250 per month.

Highly rated schools in the greater Springfield area
Hadley Public Schools were founded in 1664. “Some prefer Hadley schools over Amherst over Northampton schools because they are smaller,” says Malsch. Hadley Elementary School for prekindergarten through Grade 6 has a student-teacher ratio of 11 to 1. It scores a B-plus on Niche. Hopkins Academy teaches Grades 7 through 12 and scores a B on Niche. It offers an Early College Pathway Program, which allows students to earn 12 college credits for free through Greenfield Community College. The Hartsbrook School is a private option for prekindergarten through high school. According to Niche, it is the No. 1 Best Private K-12 School in the Springfield, MA area and earns an A overall.
